90s in Denali? Yikes!! We leave in 2 weeks, cruise first, then 9 days DIY. I'll take your dry weather but not 90! We will pack some shorts though. Thanks for reporting.

I'm sure it's been posted already, but mosquito repellant is an absolute must. Buy the best brand you can find and don't try to go with the cheapest one available.

It's almost impossible to describe how bad the mosquitos can be.

We loved (and used) the map that is included with this book: ALASKA CRUISE HANDBOOK.

The book is great, too!

I wouldn't recommend hanging the map on the wall, as we had it out with us on the balcony to refer to often.

I noticed the same map for sale in some of the shops around the ports, but we were glad to have it ahead of time.

If you have a 3-in-one jacket, you shouldn't ALSO need a rain jacket. And if you have a good rain jacket of some sort, you can leave the umbrella at home ... PLEASE! They are dangerous in crowds and often useless in the wind anyway.

  • 9 months later...

Thanks, EliseinAustin for the great list. You did the thinking for me!

We have tops and jackets to layer, but I'm wondering if we can get by with rain ponchos from Walmart. If they're cheap enough, I can buy a bunch and toss them instead of wrangling them back into a pouch! I really don't want to spend money on a rain jacket I won't use at home.

Thank you. I ordered this when I read your suggestion and it's awesome! I have what may be a silly question, but am wondering....while cruising how do you know where you are? I live along the ICW, and we have mile markers. Is this also how it works on the cruise ship route?

Some cruise ships have a channel on the TV that shows the ship's location. There is a little marker that moves along as the ship moves along.

We keep a map of our cruise route on the cabin wall, so by glancing at the TV screen, it is easy to locate our current position on the map.

Hi

Just reading your posts with a smile on my face. Living on the Gold Coast, Australia is a long way from where we are going. The thought of all that gear to bring along is bamboozling!!!

See you on y

I would add a set of silk long johns , on our first trip to AK, I used these twice, once during Glacier Bay, and on our whale watching with HarvnMarv. These will be in my suitcase for our August trip, along with a waterproof long coat from Eddie Bauer. This coat kept me very dry during a misty day in Quebec City this past October ( but add a cotton long sleeve top to offset the condensation effect )

Anyone take an umbrella?

ABSOLUTELY! I had a camera get moisture in it down under in Australia. It totally ruined the camera (got rusty inside and just never worked right again). So for our trip to Alaska, I didn't want to take the risk. My husband would hold the umbrella over me and the camera while I took photos, then the camera was put in the pocket out of the rain.

Mine is just a very small travel umbrella. Folds down to about 4" and is most always in my purse.

Evening wear on a Princess Alaskan cruise..... I am finding very conflicting information on what is common and/or appropriate. I am used to being able to drive to the port and get onboard with as much luggage as I want and I love to dress up for dinner. But with airline baggage weight restrictions, I want to keep things as minimal as possible. Recommendations please???

I have the same question!

I'm bumping this thread hoping that the poster who posted about the perfect travel bag will come back and tell us which one!

I am not the original poster, but for a Day Pack this Baggallini sling messenger bag is good and roomy and it comes in neutral and bright colors. I have the black one and have used it at Walt Disney World.
