Man Overboard? - Grand Princess

We are on our way to Hawaii on the Grand Princess. At about 1 pm there was a man overboard announcement. The ship slowed and did a u-turn. They fired flares into the water. They turned the ship totally around and a lot of the crew had binoculars searching for the missing person. At about 2:30 they ordered all passengers to their cabins without explaining that it was simply for a headcount - but ten minutes they clarified it. So we are now awaiting the next announcement.

Oh my!!...prayers for the person and I hope he has been found safe by now.

Hopefully it's just a mix up and the person is onboard. If it turns out to be somebody's sick idea of a joke I hope they get put off the ship. If there really was someone overboard the chances of actually finding them are probably not real good.

So sad. :( Princess' statement:

Today aboard Grand Princess at approximately 1 pm ship’s time (2 pm PST) while the ship was en route to Hawaii from San Francisco, a passenger was witnessed intentionally going overboard, and this was confirmed by CCTV.

The incident happened as the ship was approximately 650 miles northeast of Hilo, Hawaii.

Upon being notified by a witness, the ship turned around and is currently searching in the area where the passenger was seen going overboard.

We have identified the passenger as a 54-year old woman who is a U.S. citizen.

We have notified both the U.S. Coast Guard and FBI.

Grand Princess is on day 3 of a 15-day Hawaii cruise sailing roundtrip from San Francisco.

Thanks Pam. You have more information than we do on the ship.

The headcount of all the ship's passengers took about a half hour and we were then allowed to come out of our cabins. A few minutes later I was surprised to hear the captain come on and explain what was happening. Sadly the headcount came up one short. The ship contacted the Coast Guard and we are continuing circling looking for the missing passenger. It has been over 3 hours since we heard the first call. We are over 700 miles to our next port in Honolulu and over 1300 from San Francisco. Obviously rescue craft would have a difficult time reaching us.

The captain came on with another announcement. He said that we would search until sunset around 7 pm (another 3 hours). We are increasing the search area.

The captain announced that we will continue the search all night. The Coast Guard is sending a plane. Our port schedule will be affected and they will let us know the changes tomorrow morning.

Thank you for keeping us updated. Thoughts to the family.
