Carnival Glory

My husband and I will be going on the Glory 2/16/14 with my two kids (15 and 21). We are all Platinum. We have been on many Carnival ships but never the Glory. We were on the Dream last year and not sure if we like the newer ship. Any input on this ship would be appreciated.

I just got off the Glory a few weeks ago. It is a beautiful ship, but the food, service, and entertainment are among the worst I've experienced. The alternative dining (Guy's, Cantina, Deli) are just as good as the other ships, but the Lido buffet is subpar. The desserts are, by far, the worst selection on any Lido buffet. The MDR was a disaster, but my cruise was the first with the new dining, so it's probably not a fair assessment.

Thanks so much for the information rockbock. We have been cruising with Carnival since 1992 as well as other cruise lines. We have always enjoyed our cruises but over the past few years have noticed how Carnival keeps eliminating in order to save $$$$. It shows in the food and service. On the Dream last year the MDR was extremely slow and the food not so good. If we aren't happy on the Glory I'm afraid we will be switching over to another cruise line

So far I've only cruised Carnival. My experience on the Dream last year was much better than what you described. And my cruise on the Liberty this year was fantastic...I certainly didn't feel like there were any cutbacks or bad service on that one. Even on the Freedom in October, I didn't feel the cutbacks. I thought the ship was ugly, but that's a décor issue. The food, service, and entertainment were all ok.

It's really hard to judge this Glory cruise though. It was pretty bad all-around, but I can't help but wonder if a lot of it had to do with circumstance. Our cabin steward was the worst I've ever had (never introduced himself, never left beach towels in the cabin, repeatedly left a total of 3 or 4 bath towels in a quad cabin, never smiled or greeted us when we passed, etc..). However, I can't help but wonder if it was because I was on a completely free cruise. Carnival even paid the tips, so it makes me think that perhaps the steward was getting less than normal? We tipped him extra in cash, but I don't for certain that he might have been stiffed by Carnival.

Service in the MDR I'm excusing because it was the guinea pig run with the new menus. I have more complaints than I care to list, but it's easier to just choke that one up to a bad trial run.

The Lido buffet is what baffles me. I still haven't figured out if the Glory Lido is ALWAYS bad, or if it was changed up at the same time as the MDR and just not publicized. Many of my favorite Lido lunch items never showed up. There were typically only 3 or 4 "main" lunch items, and the rest were sides. One of the "main" items each day was a Panini, which could have just as easily been ordered at the Deli. NONE of my favorite Lido desserts ever showed up. I like the pastries the most, with my favorite being the Almond Napolean w/ Cherries. I also love the thick mousses (the creamy ones...not the "Jello" ones). I never saw any of these. I never saw the Key Lime Pie that I love. Every day there were about 4-5 desserts, plus a pudding and fresh fruit...must less choice than normal! Of the 4-5 desserts, one was always a chocolate layer cake (with a different colored icing layer each day). There were typically two other cakes, one pie, and sometimes a cheesecake. Never any pastries. :( The dinner on Lido was even worse...no selection and very bland flavors.

In 2014, I will be trying out Princess for the first time. I suspect I'll probably convert to Princess since I now qualify for some spectacular last-minute rates with Princess and I'll also receive Elite Circle benefits (which are FAR BETTER than the crappy VIFP benefits I get from Carnival).

The entertainment is pretty bad. I only went to one Playlist show. It was better than I expected, but not good enough that I'd ever go back to one. It's basically karaoke on steroids. I skipped the first one because I'm not interested in Latin music/dance. I went to the second one, but it spanned too many decades (60s, 70s, 80s, & 90s)...pretty much one or two songs that could interest people in any age group. The last one I meant to go to, but never made it. It was Divas. If they'd skip the "theme" and just stick to popular songs that span the decades, it would be better. But I really missed the variety in the shows...no acrobatics, break dancers, etc.. Just singing and prancing around the stage.

The other four nights had poor entertainment as well. One night was the Welcome Aboard show, one was a juggler who never showed up (this would have probably been the best show all week), one night was a show about famous film clips, and one night was Hasbro (fun show, but not exactly evening entertainment). There was a great magician, but his show was only 30 minutes long one night, and he was stuck in a small karaoke room. Lots of people went to this show...standing room only. Why wasn't he given a "real" show in the main lounge? The shows in the main lounge were more than half empty every night (I peeked in most nights, but didn't stay). This is the first Carnival cruise I've been on with no Legends show. I was excited that they had finally changed up the songs for Legends, but I guess this ship decided to not do it at all.

Most of the live music, trivia contests, and other games were held next to the casino bar, rather than in the atrium. Not a great spot for nonsmokers!

The Piano Man was very good. He always kept a decent crowd, since nobody was interested in the main shows.

Hi we are just off the Glory today, it was the Christmas cruise, so definitely a different clientele..... many families and we never saw any of those wild party groups.

They are starting to figure out the new menu in the dinning room. There were some great new additions to the menu as well as the old favorites. Our waiters were great but still trying to figure out the new way, especially since we had someone with a special order every night. It took a bit longer to get the food, after talking to the head we suggested they get runners for the special orders and what ever they changed did help.

We had seen all the shows before latin nights and divas on breeze last year...the glory singers and dancers were great much better than on the breeze and the shows were switched up a bit so it wasn't identical which was nice. instead of a steal band they have a guitar player at the pool some nights which was nice. Comedy was good as usual. instead of the passengers performing they had 2 singers and a live band doing a show of popular movie tunes, it was good.

My family had a great time.:)

I have no idea if a room steward would know how a passenger paid for their trip. But they might if they didn't get their tip as usual. Who knows. I can say that on my last cruise, I never met my room steward and if I walked past him I wouldn't have known who he was. DH met him and one of my kids. But I didn't. Didn't bother me though because he took good care of our room and that's all I really require. I haven't been on the Glory but have seen mostly good reviews about her. I also have her booked for 2014 along with the Sunshine. One cruise will ultimately be cancelled once DHs work schedule is final next month. Interesting reading all the reviews about both ships. Especially since you don't know with certainty which one you will be on! I'm looking forward to trying to the new menu on the Glory and the new Dr. Seuss theme for the kids on the Sunshine.

I was on this sailing and everything was really good except for the live music. DJ way too loud, no rock band. There were two guitarist, a singing duet and a Latin band. All the singers were bad. I'm sure by the time you sail they will employ new entertainers.
