Default Island Princess, helpful tips, secrets, ideas, etc

We are 37 days away from our Alaskan CruiseTour. I'm running out of steam in regards to research, so...
All you valuable Princess cruisers, especially with Island Princess, would you please share your thoughts, tips, suggestions and any tidbits about this ship. I'm working on compiling a list of things to do while onboard! I'm interest in special doors to open, "secret" decks", not well known area's where the viewing is wonderful, things to do, things to try...things to avoid. Input about the evening activities would really be valuable to me! (Perhaps that cannot be discussed until after the 1st cruise of the season, though.) Although some things will be subjective, I am ready to add to my list!

TIA

Some of the best glacier viewing will be the forward viewing balconies on Baja and Caribe deck. Just go forward on those decks and go through the doors and you'll be at the front of the ship. The aft viewing balconies aren't bad either.

Oh, and the Promenade deck is very wide and a great place to stroll and take in the scenery.

Enjoy your cruise!

We got re-assigned to the Caribe deck, so I plan on going through the front doors for optimal viewing!

Most people overdo the port time that they don't have time for may evening activities . Also the the fresh sea air and ship motion usually tires people out as well .With the Horizon court up front , you can get a table and watch the scenery as you eat lunch .

We're not planning on overdoing our port time, so hopefully we'll be able to take in some of the evening activities!

Great hint about sitting in the Horizon court watching the scenery go by!

Thanks

Just please be considerate of people looking for places to sit and enjoy their meal.

During our Panama Canal transit there were so many people in the Horizon Court that it was literally impossible to find a table due to people occupying them and only sight seeing.

I remember that from our cruise back in 2007...walking back and forth looking for a seat! Thanks for the reminder, though!

My favorite ship!! The pizza is wonderful!! Loved the evening activities and the staff was so friendly. As others have said, the aft decks are wonderful for viewing. Have a wonderful time.

We only did some scenic viewing there after the dinner rush. There were plenty of seats for people eating, Unfortunately they had to close the blinds at nightfall because of the light bothering the bridge. They also had the Forest Rangers set up at the front of the HC during Glacier Bay.

It seems that only Island and Coral have the production show "On the Bayou". We've seen lots of these shows, and enjoyed this one the most. We had a back to back and saw it both times.

There is a wonderful person who walks around at the aft pool area around 3-4pm with a cart of warm cookies! The aft pool is covered so you can stay warm, watch the scenery and munch on warm cookies!

I rarely bake (but I cook frequently), so warm, fresh cookies is something I'm going to really enjoy.

Thanks for the feedback...I'm adding this to my list of things to do while onboard The Island Princess.

Thumbs up

I agree with the other posts regarding the forward and aft 'balconies' on the upper stateroom decks. On our recent Panama Canal cruise, my party and I called the aft Caribe deck one our 'secret spot' since we were typically the only ones who used the area

On the Bayou is a must see show.

If you or any one in your group enjoys the night life or cocktail scene, please seek out Dimitrije and/or Johnny! They are on the pool decks throughout the day, but are stationed in the Explorer's Lounge at night. Out of seven different cruises I've been on, they both by far provided the most excellent bar/customer service (and the most laughs and entertainment) of any other bar server I've met.

Happy cruising!

We really enjoyed the aft area on Baja deck when leaving Glacier Bay. There were only a dozen or so people there and we had a number of whale sightings (they were at a distance and binoculars were required for the best view) as we left the park that lasted for most of an hour. YMMV.

The two Production shows (2 weeks ago) were Motor City and Do You Wanna Dance.

We are just back from an Island Princess northbound sailing. This was our first cruise and we had a wonderful time. Some things we discovered:
Call the Dine Line for anytime dining early and late reservations. We had no trouble being seated at a table for two on any occasion. The only really busy night was sail away. Dinner options were varied, well prepared, and served with a smile! Lots of choices that are indicated to be lower fat and salt content.
Breakfast via room service was a great treat. We ordered hot milk with the coffee and found it just fine (I love good coffee and after the complaints I had read on CC was expecting it to be quite awful). Just order enough of everything as it is done by per person. We ordered extra pastries and yoghurt that we kept in the fridge for disembarkation day when no room service is available.
Coffee Card works well--we had a skinny latte (either reg or decaf) most days. No punch for hot chocolate. Decaf coffee after dinner in the dining room was fine so did not use it there.
The aft balconies were great on glacier days. We had wonderful views either from there or our balcony. We did not like viewing through the "blue" panels on the upper decks.
Very glad we took binoculars for each of us --we saw lots of wild life from the ship including sea lions, sea otters, brown bear, and even a whale breaching.
We were in D709 mini-suite--bed was extremely comfortable with a padded top and was wider than a traditional US Queen. Bath tub was longer and deeper than a standard US tub. This room is over the engines and at times had lots of vibrations but we slept like logs. Our steward Robert was super!
Disembarkation was done expediently and very well organized.
My only gripe--and a very minor one--the hand lotion in the bathroom is in very hard bottles and difficult to retrieve if you have any arthritis.

What's up with those blue panels? We'll be on this ship in July. I guess the upper decks are not the place for taking photos. This seems strange to me, as I was originally planning to spend the entire day there for glacier viewing.
