NCL Owner's Suite Perks

Hello.

I just booked a Haven Owner's Suite with large balcony (S3), on NCL's Gem for a 9-day Caribbean cruise in April of 2013.

This is my very 1st cruise, in addition to my 25th wedding anniversary, and I thought that me and the wife deserved to be pampered a little bit.

We got a suite on the 10th deck forward.

Any input as to what type of perks we can expert would be greatly appreciated.

It's an amazing room! The front balcony is amazing, especially when you're sailing in and out of port. I just wanted to point one thing out, since you said it's your first cruise. Do you get motion sick at all? There is alot of movement on the front of the ship, especially up and down when the ship hits waves. There was on night where I felt like I was on a roller coster all night long. It felt like I was weightless for a moment and then gravity would pull me into the bed. It was an odd feeling to try and sleep thru.

While I agree with PeleNipsy that you will have a lot more movement than anywhere on the ship don't let that discourage you from keeping this suite! We had the OS on the Dawn and on Christmas Eve a couple years back and the ship was rockin' and rollin'. I have never had a problem with sea sickness before but that was a horrible night. I would just get some dramamine or something for queasy stomachs and take those the day before you get on and maybe the first couple of days just to see how you do. Also you could buy ginger pills or ginger candies at a pharmacy, or ginger ale I have heard works. Unfortunately I HATE ginger but I did drink some that the butler brought me when she found out I was sick. That for me actually made it worse.

The best perk for owner's suites is the use of Cagney's restaurant, especially on port days or debarkation day when everyone is upstairs at the same time. We found a butler useless, concierge useless. I booked our shore excursions before we left. All the butler did was bring us DVDs and afternoon snacks that (mostly) we could have gotten elsewhere. The room was gorgeous and vast. But it was way up front and very high, and we had the worst night at sea ever, so it was very bouncy. (That night another ship had a wave crash through a lounge window and kill someone.) There was free liquor and soft drinks, but all my husband wanted was beer, and he could not get that. I don't know we were "pampered" perse. It was a great room on a great cruise, and we loved Cagney's. But I would never pay full price for it. We got a deal wherein for $800 total, we got upgraded from mini-suite to Owner's Suite on a 16 day cruise.

I heard about Cagney's and plan on taking advantage of it often.

The price was a little steep, I agree, but I figured if I'm going to be away for 9 days, I wanted a room that I could move around in.

And I love the "king-size" bed.

Do you remember what price "PER PERSON" was for your mini (yes I know there are taxes as well) Also, do you remember what the 'normal' price per person was for the OS ? I'm trying to calculate what percentage they discount upsells. I know that it's X percent off of the 'now' price, then subtract what you already paid. Thanks in advance !

Thanks for the motion sickness recommendations. I'll definately take some with me to be prepared, just in case.

I'm definately locked into this suite mentally already less than 24 hours after booking it. There's no way I would change it.

And I can't wait to be spoiled rotten. Been waiting a long time for that.

No motion sickness that I know of. I was in the Navy way back when on a hollow flat-bottom and slept just fine. Thanks for your concern.

If it is an issue for myself or my wife, what would you recommend to combat it?

The Bonine (generic is meclizine) works great. We take one the night before we cruise and then every night during the cruise. We have always found free meclizine at the front desk, but we don't count on it, just in case. The Bonine is chewable. They sold out of everything on our last cruise, but the free stuff was still at the front desk. Have a GREAT time!

To Walter what a great experience & start to what I hope will be a lot more cruises to come. Congrats on the 25th. You will be so spoiled & yes you & your wife will be pampered. Just having the haven perks alone is fabulous. Keep in mind no one does the Suite Life like NCL! Enjoy I know you & wife will.

Also...for anyone who's interested, I booked through Hotwire and got some great extras that weren't offered on the NCL site.

The best was 5 free hotel nights directly from Hotwire (the number of nights depends on how much you spend).

Also got a 5% AARP discount and a $50 cabin credit.

Could have gottena $300 cabin credit, but the 5% AARP discount ended up being a better value.
