Surprise, surprise, but the "official" webcam on NCL.com is now working (or at least it was an hour ago). Enjoy.

I sure hope the Gem doesn't have the problem like the Pearl did when she came out, when they raised a bridge, and knocked out most of the power in Europe!

And, according to the Captain, that's why she earned the nickname, "The Black Pearl."

2) Who is driving it?

Thank you. Wonderful pictures -- both sets.
The Gem certainly has cheerful carpets.

The Gem is being towed by tug boat(s). She is going backwards beacuse there is not enough room in the turning basin at Papenburg to turn the ship around after she comes out of the building shed.

There are a couple videos out on you tube of various things about the Gem like undocking, different part of the ship and it leaving Papenberg.

1) why is the ship going bacwards down the canal

2) Who is driving it?
The pods mounted under the stern are “shovelling” the water under the ship, so to speak, and in addition it is easier to manoeuvre the ship with this type of propulsion which is comparable to the front drive of a car. "
She operated her own propulsion system, but was supported by two tugs, the “Wal” (output 2 x 1,600kW) and the “Bremerhaven” (output 2 x 1,450 kW) so as to provide double back-up in case one tug failed.
There has been 5 Captains onboard the Gem which alternated every 2 hours because it requires utmost concentration. As usual, the Emden Pilot Association has been in charge of the passage.

Looks like they got the furniture for the Spinnaker Lounge from the set of Woody Allen's movie "Sleeper."
