Just noticed very interesting wording on the RCI website may affect price adjustments

I just noticed when pricing a cruise on RCI's website that the following disclaimer appears below each cabin category grouping.

*Prices are per person, shown in U. S. Dollars. For new reservations only. Government taxes and fees are additional.


So realistically, RCI could deny you a price adjustment if the price of your cruise drops.

Let's hope they don't enforce this.

They've had that same wording for at least 3 years while I have been booking on-line. I guess that could always enforce it but I don't think they have yet. However, they do stick by the tuesday promo "new bookings only."

If you are still in the period before paying the final payment, this doesn't prevent you from making a new booking and canceling the old does it?

I've gotten at least 5 price drops although this wording appeared on the screen. It seems that only the Tues. special "sales event" ( used to the happy hour) is for new bookings only.

I create them for all the cruises I go on and I sometimes create them for others on Cruise Critic. Like the Radiance Polar Bears, Splendor Salsa Crew, etc....

I have heard rumors that you cannot cancel and re-book to get a lower price sometimes because RCI will see it as a re-book, not a new booking.

I just had to modify an upcoming cruise, so Jabar of Royal Caribbean sent me a brand new invoice. (my modification had nothing to do with price)

At the bottom, it says,

"If your price should decrease prior to your final payment date, we can easily match the new price. If the price should decrease on or after your final payment date - the new price may or may not be applicable as some of our price programs are restricted and valid for new bookings only."

Sounds like they are happy to honor price drops!

I know nothing for a fact on this subject.

But... if I were to speculate, as long as you are before final payment, I think everyone realizes that you can easily cancel and rebook. I don't think that policy will change, because the ability to cancel without any penalty is probably the biggest reason people are willing to book a cruise so far in advance. There is no risk. Take that away, and the bean counters would get very nervous when people started waiting until only 2 or 3 months out to book.

Technically, yes, they could easily recognize a cancel and a rebook, after all, with the identity requirements in place today, you can't exactly book a cruise anonymously. But what point would there be? To save them a few bucks of a price drop (overall big picture) they would infuriate much of their customer base who is well used to being able to apply price drops. Despite the fact that loyal customers do prefer Royal Caribbean, there is too much competition out there for them to deny a "rebooking" for the cost of a price drop, which by literal definition, is what they are willing to sell that cabin for at the current time. If they turn away that rebooking, the customer will just book it somewhere else at their price.

Just my thoughts.
