The Cruise Ships have returned to Costa Maya

After a little over a year from Hurricane Dean, the cruise ships have returned to Mahahual / Costa Maya. An unspecified cruise ship is currently docking at the pier this morning, 31 October 2008.

Costa Maya officially welcomes Holland America's Westerdam, its first cruise ship since Hurricane Dean caused significant damage to both the port and the nearby village of Majahual more than a year ago. Other ship visits will follow throughout November as the Caribbean's fall and winter cruise season gears up, including Holland America's Veendam, Carnival Legend, P&O's Oceana, Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas, Disney Magic and Norwegian Spirit. If you visit Costa Maya or Majahual in the next few weeks, tell us about it -- and post photos here, too!

We will be there on Independence of the Seas Dec. 7th cruise. We were there two years ago before Hurricane Dean hit. That hurricane hit dead on and lingered for two days. Kudos to the people of Costa Maya for all of their diligence and hard work. Pictures of the devastation were heartbreaking and I think of them every day. Now, at last, the tourists return.

Although Dean did make a direct hit on Costa Maya it DID NOT sit over the Costa Maya for two days. Hurricane Dean was actually a fast moving storm.

Yes, it was Wilma that sat over the coast for 48 hours much further north of Costa Maya.

We're glad it's back also. We were there a couple of years ago and had a most enjoyable time. Can't wait to get back there, and looking forward to some reviews of the new facilities.
