Can't remember the rates for jeep rentals. Are they set or negotiable? Can you squish 5 people in one? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Just why do you think you need to rent a jeep?

NO, 5 people will not comfortably fit in a Jeep. The poor adults forced to sit in the back "seat" will be most unhappy about it. I know I would.

Prices are fixed, except when they are negotiable. It all depends on supply and demand. If the rental company has lots of vehicles and few customers, they will be more likely to deal, especially the local companies. If there are lots of people there the day you visit wanting to rent, you'll pay what they ask if you want to rent. It depends on when you visit the island.

Personally, I'd rent a car in advance thru www.cozumelinsider.com and I would definitely get the full coverage insurance.

Picked up on this helpful thread... Our family of 5 is looking to rent a car 11/16. The rental link is great, but seems to provide vehicles only for visitors by air. We'll arrive via Carnival at Puerta Maya port.

Is it possible to arrange a rental beforehand for 5 hours or so from a rental agency near the port?

Thanks!

Of course. They will work with you so you can pick up the car at the closest place to the cruise pier. Shoot them an email and tell them what you need.

We just got off the Valor and rented a Jeep at the Puerta Maya location. We paid $50/55 with tax. We didn't book ahead of time. We loved having the Jeep. It was a great day.

Thanks for the info.
We are group of 9 and we just want to get to the other side since a couple people in our group have never been over there. We looked at doing the party bus but we have a couple of people that don't drink much and could be our DD if we rent jeeps. We want to stop at a couple beaches and bars and end up at Carlos and Charlies. I have a feeling C&C won't be hopping since we are the only ship in port so we want to have other options. The party bus was $49 per person so renting 2 jeeps is a much better deal. Hubby and I rented one once before and loved not being on a schedule.

Default Avis at Puerto Maya Pier

I have rented jeeps from Avis twice at the Puerto Maya Pier (The Carnival Pier). I think it was 50 to 60 total each time. You can get it for less from several other local rental agencies.

<Just why do you think you need to rent a jeep?>

For one thing, the roads to the northern and southern lighthouses are so rough you need a Jeep to negotiate them. Plus you'll have more fun in a Jeep than a Toyata Yaris.

Rental jeeps do NOT have 4 wheel drive because the rental agencies disconnect the 4 wheel drive shift linkage so even if you wanted to engage the 4 wheel drive you would NOT be able to do so. The reason the rental agencies disconnect the shift linkage is that they do not want people to take the jeeps off road. In fact, it invalidates the rental agreement. You are supposed to stay on the paved roads, and they are in fine condition. No, the only valid reason to rent a jeep is if you wan to drive around with the top down, and a person can do that in a convertible VW for less $.

Riding around in the back "seat" of a jeep is anything but "fun" IMO.

Cars cost less to rent, are more comfortable to ride in, have AC, can be locked.

I don't know, there were 20 of us and we rented 5 jeeps for the day. Had a blast. You're too old if the top down and a little bumping around for the day bothers you.
