Default Are RCI wrong about GRT?

I have been told on this site that GRT is about volume and not weight.

Yesterday RCI advertised about cruises on the Oasis in swedish papers and they said that the WEIGHT is 220000 ton. Are they wrong about that? I also looked on their swedish site and there they talked about the weight too, not the volume. Don't they know what they are talking about?

If the statement came from a marketing/public relations person, they probably have no clue what they're talking about. Or maybe it was just lost in translation.

It is often referred to as weight, even though it is not strictly true....

Here is a Wikipedia link that explains it a little.

Thanks for the link!

I guess that the answer is that RCI don't know what they are talking about!

It was explained by a lecturer on a Celebrity cruise we took that the tonnage was calculated by the number of barrels ( sorry don't know the size of barrel) a ship could hold under cover. When there was a race between two ships , forget the names ,to be classed as the 'largest in the world' one only had to enclose an outside area with a permanent structure to automatically increase it's tonnage therefore winning the race.
This was all in the 'olden days'.
