Default Perfect day at Rockley/Accra Beach

Thanks to the great advice found (Aplmac & others) in this Barbados forum, we taxied (15-20 minutes) to this beach on 11/6 during our cruise on the Noordam. We found wonderful smooth sand, warm turquoise water with a nice breeze in a postcard setting.

We rented chairs ($5 ea) and umbrellas ($5 ea). We paid $30US ($7.50 X 4 people) each way for the cab (van which also carried two unrelated passengers).

There are trees (away from the water) if you needed more shade.

We would certainly come back here for a beach day!

Yes, those trees. There were no vendors, although twice, passing guys discreetly asked me if I wanted any "smoke". My brother-in-law was "kidding" me because it appeared that I was the only one asked. I must have the "look"- LOL .

Thanks - great recommendation!

Also, the cab driver was more than happy to come back for the return trip. There seems to be a lot of taxi competition and he was happy for the fare. We had a great day!

Question for Aplmac

Aplmac, you've always said to get taxis outside the gate in Barbados. Can you tell me what the difference is between the 2 groups? Do the ones inside the gate pay an additional rate to get there? Are they licensed differently perhaps? I'm just confused as to why some are allowed inside the gate and not others.

Although I can't answer this question with certainty
I think you'll find the guys on the inside
have Official Sea Port Taxi stickers on their vehicles
and yes I'm sure they pay a handsome rate to get first call at cruisers, as they leave the terminal
thus their extortionist rates and 'overly-competitive' behaviour!

If you're going into the town to do a little shopping
sometimes the best modus operandi of all is
to engage one of the town taxi guys, after you're done shopping
and have him take you wherever -up to and including island-tours!

I think you'll find them a bit more tractable -and glad for your business.
And yes we have more taxis than there is business for them all
(except of the very busiest of days)
so don't take any BS from them, ok?

Like all (un-metered)taxi drivers all over the world
they try to sucker you however they can!!
Get smart.
