Default Where to see sail away

I will be in Ft Lauderdale on 12/5/09 and want to watch the sail away of the Oasis, I have friends leaving on that cruise and was wondering if there is a public place or maybe restaurant that I can go to and watch them.

Thanks
Donna

A good place is the viewing area on top of the 17th street causeway bridge. I also think that you can get down to the beach area and watch right at the entrance to the port.

Is the area on the south side of the port inlet open to the public? From the satellite photos, it appears to not be particularly developed, but it's hard to say for sure.

The south side appears to have some sort of a jetty, is it all rocks? Can a person get to a good viewing point in that area? What about parking nearby?

Or are there better views and easier access from the north side of the inlet?

Here's a map with the satellite view:

Thanks,

Theron

The south part of the inlet is "John U Lloyd" State park. It is open to the public and once the ship is in the inlet you'll have a beautiful view of her leaving. But the Coast Guard station on the west side of the park will block your view of the ship coming out of its dock. Also you're not allowed to go out on the actual South Jetty.

You may want to get on the North Jetty where you will more than likely be able to see the ship as it pulls away from the pier and then sets sail through the inlet.

If you go back through all the threads in this forum of pictures from her arrival on the 13th you'll see photo's of all the places to view her from.

That is my question also, from some pics I have seen there are plenty of people standing on that jetty.

Hopefully someone that lives nearby and has been will give us the specifics!

Thanks for the info. One question about the north view though, Oasis is scheduled to depart at 5PM, sunset over the next few days is around 5:30. Will this be an issue?

The Jetty you probably saw people standing on was the North Jetty. Supposedly the south jetty is fenced off.

The North Jetty is on the beach which is public (no such thing as a private beach in Florida) so you can go there whenever you like. Parking is a little more difficult on the North side because its mostly residential but people find spots.

The only problem I can think of is that you will more than likely be in the shadow of the ship... otherwise I don't see a problem. Was there something specific you were thinking of?

Just wondering if you would be looking right into the sun, or if the ship would be silhouetted as it goes by. Not great for best viewing.

Ehhh you would kind of have that problem from either side. Here is a shot from Inletcam right now which happens to be 5:30p, though today is cloudy. But from looking at that shot and by looking outside right now the sun shouldn't be a problem.
