Hi, friends,
I have a group of 8 with seniors and children. We don't want to take any snorkeling tour since most of us won't snorkel, but 3 of us are interested. So is it possible that we can get to CHILENO BAY by ourselves, relax on the beach if not snorkel, and some of us can do a little bit snorkeling too? We have our own gear. Thanks a lot for the info! |

I don't believe you can access Chillean Bay on your own. I think this is one area you need to take an excursion.

We know people who live down there in the Winter and have gone on there own to Chilano bay, I think you could grab a taxi, although I heard it is expensive, and you may have to ask the taxi to come back and get you later. Aparently there is another beach near by with amenities, not sure about the snorkeling.

You can snorkel in Chileano Bay and near by Santa Maria Bay. Both places are accessible from the highway. It is an expensive cab ride from town to these locations and drive time will be approx 30 min from the tender dock. You may be better off taking a water taxi from the tender dock to these spots. I'm not sure what the water taxi will charge, but make sure you know before you get on board. Be sure to make arrangements to be picked up too. It's a long walk back to town and there are not taxi's lined up waiting to take people back to town. Good luck. Snorkeling in these 2 spots is absolutely wonderful. Enjoy.

You could easily walk out of the marina to the main road and rent a car, or in your case, a van. That would be the easiest. If you are feeling adventurous, you could take the bus that runs the highway between San Lucas and San Jose, also out on the main road. When you step into the bus ask the driver to drop you at Chilleno Bay. If it is the wrong bus, he will not let you on. Bus fare is about $1.50 US and the buses run about every 20 min. A taxi would cost $30-35 US. We usually take the bus but occasionally grab a taxi home as they are frequently waiting in the parking lot for a fare. The only thing I am wondering is if 8 is going to require more than one taxi. I know from the airport they will usually only transport 6 but that could be with luggage. Just ask.
