Default Is there a free unconfirmed standby list?

There is a flight that leaves about 3 hours before my original flight and I've confirmed there are seats available. I would like to get on the earlier flight but it's not worth enough to me to pay anything. Is there a way to get on a free unconfirmed standby list?

I've read other threads but they all seem to be older then the latest changes in their policy and I can't find any specific information

I do this with the other 2 airlines frequently without any issues. It sure would make me consider Continental for my future travel needs.

Is there a free unconfirmed standby list?

Thank you to everyone in advance

I'd suggest you go directly to the source. Call the airline and ask them.

As you found out when you posted the exact question on Flyertalk, there is NO free change except at connections on CO unless you are a top tier FF.

How would you know there are seats available? If you are using seat maps, a VERY unreliable way to tell how full an airplane REALLY is. The only reliable ways to know how full a flight is would be to subscribe to Expertflyer, Sabre/Apollo or possibly use the KVS availability tool.

Some airlines will give you the option of paying a special fee to try to go standby on an earlier flight, but unless you have status with the airline, it can be steep.

The only reason they will let passengers go out on earlier flights for free is if there is bad wather coming and they want to clear out the passengers.

There is no free lunch in the airline business these days.

Certainly the two airlines I fly the most (AS, UA) both allow this free of charge. CO **might** allow it for free if the latter flight it full or close to it...

Why is this so difficult? It's clearly posted right on CO's webpage:
