Default So, what did you wear on your feet?

Everything is set, have read up on money, shots, mummy tummy, etc., but now I need to know - just what did you ladies wear on your feet?
Sandals - and let the sand slide in and out - or tennis shoes?
A friend suggested desert boots and the only ones I have seen are big clumpy boots which might be very hot to wear; also, too much money.

What worked for you?
thanks.

While I have not yet been to Egypt - going in March 2010 - I have been to Africa (sub-Sahara). I wore hiking boots/shoes. I use them on all our vacations. They are comfortable for walking and permit me to climb and traverse varied terrain safely.

JMHO. Have fun!

I am not a big fan of tennis shoes. I wore Skechers that looked a lot like these:

http://www.skechers.com/shoes-and-cl...yptonite/dsch/

I wouldn't recommend sandals. It's not just the desert; Cairo is very dirty and I really preferred having my feet somewhat enclosed (even if a little sand did get in). Be aware that your shoes (and everything else) will likely be covered with dust at the end of the day.

Talking Shoes

I wore Reeboks, nobody cares about white shoes in Egypt. I also have worn Easy Spirits. Any closed toe comfortable shoe with a thick sole will do. Egypt can be a little dirty with the sand and grit so sandals might not be a good choice.

We're just back from the Rotterdam. You need to wear shoes that you don't mind getting dirty and/or can be cleaned. They also have to be sturdy and comfortable to climb around the pyramids.

I have good walking shoes that I wore but they were filthy after our day in Cairo. I wore them for the rest of the trip (what else could I do?) but tossed them before we came home.

I am going to wear my heavy-duty sandals with socks.

Remember, in SlumDog Millionaire, the young boy (at the Taj Mahal) stole the shoes that were left outside the Mosque, so that he could sell them.

Wear Old Shoes to Mosques.

You don't leave your shoes outside in mosques in Egypt. You either hand them to an attendant, put in into a cubbie in the ante-chamber, or you are given a plastic bag to put them into and you carry them with you.

If you are that concerned, take your own plastic bag and you can always take them with you; no one will have a problem with it.

Was in Cairo two years ago. I agree Skechers or Reebok type athletic shoes work best. Just make sure they're comfortable.

Thanks to all.
DonMar - have nixed the idea of boots. Just too much money and probably very hot.
Cruisemom42 and Moonglow I think I shall take your advice and use my old (well, not that old) Reeboks - actually, I have 3 pairs but not all Reeboks. I will take a decent pair and an older pair and do what you did - throw them away upon leaving Egypt.
Thankyou all. Watch out - shall be coming up with a few more questions eventually.

I opted for closed toe slip-on type shoes. Closed toe to protect my feet from the dirt and being stepped but also slip-on type (without socks) to help keep my feet cool. I'm the type of person that hates wearing socks!! The sand did get caught in the shoes while at the pyramids but it's a superfine sand that can be easily wiped / shaken out.

I wore sandals the whole time, had no problems with the sand, plus they were easy to clean after the trip, they were pretty dusty from the sand.

I took my Merrell Siren Sport trail running shoes. They are very lightweight, but sturdy enough for lots of walking on different types of surfaces. Yeah, some of the really fine sand got into my shoes, but a couple of whacks against a wall got all of it out.

What a great question to ask! Thank you, OP, and thanks to all who offered suggestions. Believe I'll take my oldest sneakers and toss them afterwards.

Can you take off your shoes (to prepare for going in the mosque) but carry them inside a purse or backpack - not leave them outside?
