Default Category Upgrades

Okay...since I have only cruised once I am bit naive when it comes to things like this. We received yesterday an EPIC brochure and card good for a one category upgrade on our next cruise (I imagine that this is nothing special and is sent to all first time cruisers).

So my questions are:
1. If I book a BB does that mean we get upgraded to BA? (I know this seems so simple but I want to be sure I am understanding it)

2. I am thinking that the 1 category is not that big of a deal...I am thinking that I should hold out for something better? I have seen random advertisements for 3 category upgrades as well as OBC.

You are reading it correctly. However, there are usually limitations - typically, inside to inside, outside to outside, balcony to balcony, etc. So, a BB to a BA upgrade fits. However, read the fine print - sometimes, the promotion is limited to certain categories and certain sailings.

Category upgrades simply mean a different location on the ship. For example, a BB may be in the front of the ship. An upgrade to BA may move you to the middle of the ship but on the same deck.

Category upgrades never mean paying for an oceanview and getting a balcony, or paying for an inside and ending up with a suite.

Getting the OBC is the real bonus.

They like to throw around those category upgrades that seem to make a few people happy. Most realize it is no big deal. And often can not be used with some sales or specials.

To confirm what others said, it is within each level, so you can not go from oceanview to balcony. And of course, since each suite level stands by itself, you can not go from an AE suite to AD, etc. Some think that stinks, but it makes perfectly good sense, from a business standpoint.

No...I am a grateful person and typically am pleased with anything I get as a bonus! Perhaps I wasn't clear...I only said that because I recently received an email from NCL offering a 3 cat upgrade. Just didn't want to bite on this offer if there are better offers that typically appear.
