I've read several of the Tulum reviews and posts and have seen people's comments regarding time constraints. We will be in Cozumel from 8am-10pm. For those who have been there, would you still be concerned about using a private tour company with that kind of time allotted? Thanks!

We went to Tulum on Christmas day 2007! It was amazing and we had plenty of time to explore the grounds with our NCL tour. The bus ride was long but worth it! You will be in 'awe' when you see the massive buildings and the Caribbean Sea in the background. We enjoyed the ferry ride from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen.

With that amount of time you should be fine. This last September we were on a carnival cruise. I am glad we were on a carnival excursion to Tulum because the ship was waiting on us. We were really only 15-20 minutes late....but we were late.
I don't know what the ferry cost was. If there was a charge it was included in our carnival paid excursion. |

Tulum is quite a distance away from the ship and alot of things could happen....flat tires, injury, weather hold-ups.....I'd take the cruise's excursion and enjoy my day without any worries...it's only money...I'd rather be safe (not missing the ship) than sorry......(we did take Carnival's excursion and really enjoyed our day at Tulum) (The "ferry" back to Cozumel is a fast moving, rough ride.....I'm glad I took my Bonine, many people got seasick.)

Another piece of info for you if you do this on your own -- don't buy round trip tickets. There are two ferry companies that run between PDC and Coz and they alternate departure times. Tickets are only usable on the line you purchase from. So, if you happen to just miss the ferry you bought a r/t ticket on, you may have to wait for an hour or more for your next ferry. |

The price of the ferry is $140 pesos. The travelnotes schedule is not currently valid. During November they increased the number of crossings to ten trips daily, still down from the 13 crossings which used to be the case. As stated the two companies, the dual monopoly alternate crossings so buy two one way tickets.
Currently (and hopefully to improve) you would have a 6:00PM and an 8:00PM departure which would get you to the island by 9:00PM. |

I would love the comfort that comes with knowing that if there is a delay that the ship would be waiting. |

Just got back from tour at Tulum through Princess. You would have enough time but I agree with other posters I wouldnt risk it on this one. I do many private tours but there are so many variables here: ferry, bus trip, weather, etc.

I am thinking about going to Tulum with the Princess tour in January. Can you tell me a little more about what you thought about the tour? Did you have enough time at the ruins? Did you feel the tour moved along or were there many stops for souvenirs, bathroom breaks along the way? Thanks!

It is not too difficult. There was a shuttle that took people from the parking area to the entrance. Otherwise, it was a walk (on paved roads) of a few 10ths of a mile. Once inside the ruins, the landscape is relatively flat, with well marked paths. There are steps to encounter if you want to overlook the Gulf or go down to the beach. You can pace yourself without much trouble, I would think. Just my opinion.
