Even though we were very concerned about the Rhine water levels, our November 8th cruise on Viking Helvetia from Amsterdam to Basel did sail. You could see that the water levels were low but we did make it without any problems. We arrived in Amsterdam on late Saturday afternoon and stayed at the Marriott (good choice, although the meals are expensive in the hotel). We went to the ship about 11:30 am to drop off our luggage and then went on the Stop 'n Go bus around town and to the grocery store for coke light and some wine. The crew was very helpful with directions etc. Check in was very easy and quick. Our cabins were in a great location 209 and 210. No vibrations or noise. There has been lots of discussion about the meals on Viking. They were good, for the most part. One of our travelmates has to eat gluten free and Viking was great and at every meal, Stephanie, our server helped to select gluten free items or entrees were adapted to be gluten free. They even provided gluten free bread at all meals. Breakfast and lunch buffets were really good with lots of fresh fruits and salads. Soups were offered at lunch and dinner and they were all outstanding. Portions were not huge but you never left hungry. And, as others have said, plan on at least 2 hours for dinner. Only the starters are prepared in advance and with only 7 servers it does take time. The crew was always willing to help and to answer questions. Shore excursions started on time and when the ship was scheduled to leave at a certain time, it left (one couple was almost left because they were not back in time). Since this was the off season, we did not have lots of crowds in the towns. The average age of the passengers was 50s and 60s and all were very friendly and most were well traveled. With only 180 passengers it was easy to make new friends. I did not do a couple of the tours because of "mobility issues" (knee replacements) but did hear good things about all of them and I was pleased with the ones that I did do. The cabins were small but had lots of room to store items. Did have a chance to see the lower level cabins and they are small. One morning, our friends woke up to a beautiful swan staring into their cabin window! When we were ready to disembark (which was very smooth) we were waiting in the restaurant and happen to see 3 men whom we had not seen before. They came over and introduced themselves to us and one of them the CEO of Viking, Torstein Hagen. He was very interested in our experience on the ship and if we had any suggestions. I hope that Viking continues to work on the communications with passengers given the problems in October with a bus tour rather than a river cruise. Again, we were lucky the river levels were ok but we did learn alot from those passengers who had so many problems in October. We did see the River Ambassador on the river but did not see the interior. I highly recommend the Rhine River and just hope the water levels are good. Thanks to all of those who provided all of the information before we left. It was helpful and we had a good idea of what to expect.

Thanks so much for your report. It was good to know you had an enjoyable time and got to meet the CEO of Viking. Perhaps they are paying attention!
