That is a huge challenge to keep the video steady while trying to keep up with the group. One answer is to use a wide angle lens which is much more forgiving if you are a little shaky. Most video camera do not come with a very wide angle. I know I've added a wide angle adapter to my XR500V with good results.

Nice videos! .. Don't you love Vegas!
Windows movie maker is a free program That's the good news. I tried it myself but didn't like it. Very basic. I think it very worthwhile to learn Vegas or PowerDirector or the like and find a great user forum for questions.
I use a monopod to keep it steady, light weight and easy to pack. Yes Vegas is wild, do you go over to creative cow???

Paul - I like the 4 way picture wall, but for specific scenes only (seems to be good for motion & showing different angles of that motion, e.g. the canal tour), not an extended period of time. So, I would vote for version 3, but I would use transitions in and out of the 4 way picture wall. The short version 4, would be good for a commercial for the tour boat company...gets a lot of scenes out there quickly!

Great you have the XR-500V also! It has a stabilization feature which helps with keeping the camera shot steady. One thing I noticed about this camera, is that it seems to have a great microphone. On our gondola trip in Venice, you could really hear the water slapping the bottom of the gondola and when we went down some side canals, the mic even picked up the creaking of the hull of the gondola!

tmitchell82 - I like what you said about adding an external mic with a windscreen. Definitely what you need on the deck of an underway cruise ship! I'll have to go back and look at my video where we are entering Venice, as I was recording from a high deck (adult serentity area on Carnival Dream), so I want to hear how the mic did again with that wind/relative wind.

I saw a video on CC where the videographer describes using some kind of vest thing that keeps the camera steady...anybody heard of such a device?

Looks like this thread has taken off !

Marty -- You may be talking about a steady cam rig. Expense and bulky. http://www.dvcity.com/vest/reversearm_vest_5.jpg There is a "poor mans" versions around that works fairly well .. http://steadycam.org/ ... The idea of a mono pod is a good one -- Tried that many years ago -- but not lately. Might be worth a re-visit..... I carry a really tiny table-top tripod and often I can find a place for it and it takes just a few seconds to setup. It's so small it fits in my camera bag....The mic on the XR500V is fairly good but works best for me in the "built in zoom" setting. I wish that was the default. I tried the external Sony Shotgun Mic and didn't like it. I'm planning on getting a mic before my next cruise.

I have visited Creative Cow for Vegas but not often. Sony Vegas Pro Forum for me. http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/

The external mic does a pretty good job with the wind. There are still times when you are going to notice the wind, but not as much. My camera has microphones on each the side of the camera so the cross wind noise was much less noticeable with the external mic. Had an older Sony camera with mics on the front and still noticed the wind issues on the audio so I do like the external mic. Makes the camera bigger, but worth it for better sound. Also matters how it is set. I did not use the shotgun mode, but rather the 120 degree setting which seemed to work best.

I have figured out that if you want to narrate while filming, it is better to do it afterwards in the software or get a clip on mic to plug into the camera. The mic, both internal and external, are designed to pick up more sound towards the front rather than behind the camera (or just talk a little louder....)

Below is a link to the microphone I have for my camera.

Fore on the Floor - thanks for the link (I have saved as a favorite)! Yes, the HD-1000 looks like the way to go. $399 is a reasonable price. It would be great to have your videos rock solid stable like professional productions!

Tim- also thanks for the link on the external microphone. I'll have to check out the SONY accessories and see if I can find a similar external mic.

Paul - thanks for the info. I'll also have to try the bulit in zoom setting for the camera's mic. As with my editing software (Pinnacle HD Utlimate 14), guess I'm not realizing the potential of my camera either ...

Interesting information. I do find it hard to believe that 95% buy the Cyber Link Power Director. Anyone ever used that?

Thanks Ron for the link. I didn't see my version of Pinnacle on the list. However, it caused me to go back and see exactly what I have.

I apologize, I thought I had Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 14 HD, but I only have version 12 . Wow, I'm already behind..time to upgrade .

Still, my version 12 handles the HVCHD format (for full 1080 HD), no problem. But, may be time to get the extra "bells & whistles" with Ultimate 14 HD.

My guess is that it is bundled with a lot of computer package's and people buy it from there.

Tim - I noticed the same thing. I'm a little skeptical that 95% buy that particular editing software.

Mmmm, the "Top Ten" list...brought to you by Cyber Link?

That was one of the thoughts I had. I had actually never heard of the software. Granted, I have always had a Mac. I would think Adobe would have a greater market share since they are known for their photo and video software.

I too am a little skepital of the percentages quoted, but the article does allow a side-by-side comparison of the features offered by various programs.

Thanks again Ron for posting that link.

I'm encouraged...the lower Pinnacle Studio fared pretty well on that list (#5), so the higher versions should fare even better. I was reading about the newest Pinnacle Ultimate Studio HD 14, and they say this version is much more user friendly.

Need to upgrade to 14 (and buy my Glidecam HD-1000 ) before our Carnival Ecstasy cruise July 10th!

I took a look at a few of the programs. Interesting to see how similar Pinnacle is to iMovie. I think the software makers are trying to makes these basic video editing programs much easier for the average person to us. The professional stuff is not as intuitive. For me starting to use Final Cut was a much bigger learning curve than iMovie.

Has anyone found a free site like youtube that allows you to upload vidoes longer than 10 minutes? I have used vimeo to get around the audio issues on youtube, but am still limited to the size. Below is the video I put together from our chef's table.

Hi Tim,

Awesome slideshow & beautiful, clear pics. I ran into the 10 min wall also w/Photobucket (free version), but I upgraded it (I think it was around $25) and now I believe I can post videos more than 10 min.

That being said, I'm kind of in the mind-set to keep doing "parts", about 6-7 min each, for the longer videos. You'll notice, my very first video (on our Med Cruise on the Carnival Dream) is exactly 10 min; I had to edit it down because it was before I upgraded on Photobucket.

Also, I did notice the "copyright police" on YouTube and that your selected music may get deleted. No worries about that on Photobucket. Also- Photobucket uploads on Cruise Critic just fine...

Marty

Marty - One of the big reasons I put that video on Vimeo was that I did not have to deal with the copyright issues. I have the same video on youtube, but the audio has been "disabled"

I have thought about making various parts to the trip. Down side is that my final product is a DVD of the cruise and I can not upload just part of it. Guess, I should try making a few 10 minute parts to some of this. I am sure I could use more of the video I took.....maybe a project for a raining day (or one that will be 95 like today...)

Here's a recent list from Amazon of their best selling video editors of the moment. Vegas Movie Studio 10 is at the top of the list but I had no idea there was a Version 10 yet? .. There are so many versions of everything that it is hard to follow. - Paul

Here is a link to the lastest Vegas Movie Studio Package. This package is a tremendous value and offers "near" the professional product for much much less. I doubt many of us would need more than this offers. Free Download trial.

Paul - thanks for the links. I downloaded the free-trial to give it a test spin. Decisions, decisions ...

Tim - yeah, YouTube seems weird like that. Sometime they "disable" the audio, other times, they just post what the song is and how to buy it .

Btw, I noticed that you have predominately sailed Princess . How did you like them? We're think of sailing Diamond Princess in Alaska, summer 2011.
