We are looking at going on a cruise on Pacific Pearl and was wondering if they let you take booze on board or do they take it off you. And if so, does anyone have any good tips on how to smuggle some on board when entering the ship – I have been told they scan your luggage like at a airport.

The best place to research this is on the P&O board, here:

If it's like P&O UK, you can take alcohol on board, but it's cheaper to buy spirits from the steward than to buy in the UK.
Try asking on the Aus/NZ thread, 2 threads beow this one.....there will be lots of people who've sailed on her. Jo.

Will scanners and xray machine not pick up the liquid?

It can, but there is no obvious shapes that show up on the scanner as with a glass bottle. They scan several thousand bags in a very short time. I've never been caught in over 15 cruises.
