Opportunity just opened up and I called for IS. Was told this was available; will be my first time trying a 1A but should be fine with me; I'm an old tent camper,ha!

You'll be fine with a 1A on the Freedom, which is Conquest class. Some of the Conquest class 1As even have portholes, and I love them! With an IS, you'll probably get an inside but it will still be fine.

The 1As to avoid are on Fantasy class-- small, and can't sit up in bed to watch TV because the extra fold-down bed is right behind you, in the wrong place-- so you have to sit in the little chair. But I've slept on deck on sailboats, so any cabin works for me if the price is right!

That is so amazing. Congrats! How's the airfare? Don't forget about ChoiceAir. They sometimes come thru with great rates. I saved over $1400. booking my return flight from Europe with them.

Well, I suspected airfare would be a problem (expensive). But I've spent ten years looking for a single/balcony at a "doable" price. (You can find my posts on this subject much earlier in this thread.) This is the first one I have ever found -- so I grabbed it while the grabbing was good. (There were only two balcony cabins left. I took one and within a few minutes the other one was booked as well.)

Airfare was around $600 ($690 on choiceair). Too much! After many hours of searching I booked the best deal I could find: frequent flyer miles Las Vegas to Tampa then AirTran to San Juan ($200). Not ideal but worth the $$ savings.

Admittedly, I am a disorganized, single guy. I feel the same way about shopping as I do about packing: I hate them both!

When I last cruised, long ago, paying to check luggage was unheard of. I use to pack everything -- including a kitchen sink! Times have changed.

I'm trying to figure out if it is possible to pack for a 7 night cruise taking nothing larger than a carrry-on sized suitcase. Obviously I wouldn't take my snorkeling gear (or a kitchen sink!). Also, taking a suit and dress shoes, etc., would be, questionably, a no-no. (I am not exactly a gregarious person -- so I may or may not miss going to dinner on formal nights.)

Since I am flying two different airlines the cost of checking a suitcase would be double.

I'd appreciate your thoughts and packing tips.

You would be surprise with how much you can pack in the following manner

Put your shirt flat in your suitcase with the top in the suitcase and the tail sticking out over the edge. The next shirt put the top in the suitcase, but on the side that the first shirt is hanging over the edge. Then on the end of the suitcase do each end the same way....after getting 2 or 3 layers of doing this, gather up all the ones hanging over the sides of the case and "fold" into the case....it will look like a "cube" then continue with the next group. I would suggest putting shoes and stuff in a bag and put on top of last "cube".....I could not believe what I actually got into the suitcase packing this way....good luck

You can slide by on formal night with dress pants, shirt and tie.

There is a laundry on board which is way cheaper than the extra bag.
