An acquaintance of ours just recently returned from a cruise and told us that before his cruise, he went to his bank and got some $2.00 bills for tipping, particularly for room service. You can still get $2.00 bills, and they are legal tender. And he said it makes sense to get 10 $2.00 bills for $20.00 rather than twenty ones. That way your wallet is a little thinner. Sounds like a good idea to me. Does anyone else do this?

I quit doing it when I read that the crew has a hard time spending $2 bills because so many places think it's not real. I even had a gift shop in Coz refuse to take $2 bills.

Same issue with $1 coins, can be difficult to use outside the country.

I just keep a stack of $1's in the drawer for room service.

I've heard the same as okgirl. It's not really a big thing to bring some ones--I wouldn't want to make things more difficult for them.

A lot of regular stores here in NYC refuse to take 2 dollars, since it looks fake/not real to them

In my experience if I leave home with only twentys and fiftys, I end up coming home with a lot of singles and fives. Not worth the effort to go get change for me.

Nope. We take a variety of 1's, 5's 10's for tips. $2.00 bills are a PIA to me.

we did for a bit but also heard they are hard for the staff to use cause some foreign countries think they are fake. Now we dont

Well, it seemed like a good idea. I wasn't aware that it creates problems for the staff. Thanks for the info everyone.

The one thing we do is leave home with larger bills - and enough to make it through tipping for the day of travel.

Then, when the casino opens, we go and change out money for smaller bills for tipping as needed during the cruise.

Works out (and less to carry)!

It is our experience in Mexico (we have been there many times) that the $2 bills are considered lucky. If they receive it some people believe keeping it in their wallet will bring more money to them (some people keep it for years not spending it). We have gotten some really fun reactions. Like everywhere, not every mexican believes that.

Yes, the casino or the guest services desk will make change for any large bills......

nope. the crew believes this is fake money, and it's hard for them to get rid of, because most don't believe it.

there was even an article in the papers last week where someone called the cops for someone trying to pay with a $2 bill.

and there's the seedy side of them anyway. they are mostly used to pay stripers in the clubs.

Would this be the guys that paint the stripes on parking lots? Nothing "seedy" about that. Just seems a little cheap to me. They must be non-union stripers.
