Best airline to fly from Sydney to Melbourne

We are cruising on Aurora next January from Southampton to Sydney. We want to fly to Melbourne and fly back to the UK from there. Which is the best airline to use?

We flew Virgin Australia several times within Australia and found them to be quite good. The weight of a carry on is limited so you will be required to check a bag that would be considered acceptable to carry on in the US. Also it is much cheaper to prepay for your luggage compared to checking it at the airport.

Virgin and Qantas are both excellent domestic airlines.

I'd check their baggage entitlements and choose the one which best meets your needs.

In order of preference I'd pick: Virgin Blue, Qantas, JetStar and a long way last, Tiger. Book online for all of them. Be aware of luggage weight limits/tariffs and they are very strict about checkin deadlines.

For the flight between Sydney and Melbourne, I would choose the one that has the cheapest seats. It is only an hours flight and Virgin, Jetstar and Qantas are all good, though on Qantas, you don't pay extra for food and luggage but then again their prices are usually higher which makes up for those extras. We use the three of them and we have never had a bad flight.

As far as leaving Melbourne for the UK, we always use Singapore Airlines which are a wonderful airline with great service.

Thanks for the responses. We have travelled Singapore Airlines before, and luckily P&O have booked us with them this time for our flight back to the UK via a 2 day Singapore stopover

Domestically Sydney - Melbourne you have these choices :* Qantas or Virgin Australia are full service airlines with acceptable Cattle Class, but still an aerial bus service .* Jetstar is a discount Operator with no frills and tighter seat spacing.* Tiger is the bottom of the barrel, cheap as chips but you jammed in like battery hens.Internationallly from Melbourne your best options :*Qantas - MEL - SIN - LON flown with A380 or B747*Singapore Airrines - MEL - SIN - LON* Thai - MEL - BKK - LON* Cathay Pacific - MEL - HKG - LON* Emirates - MEL - DUB - LONIf you can spare the time do MEL - Asia as a daylight flight, stopover one day in the Asian city, Then Asia - LON are all overnight.Recommendation fly Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong the Worlds Most Exciting City, fabulous airline in all respects and Hong Kong is a great stopover.

We booked Qantas for our International flights and also internal Australian flights. We got the Qantas "Airpass" rates of AU$99 per leg per person since we booked all at the same time, plus a higher domestic baggage allowance.

I would have preffered to fly Virgin Atlantic/virgin Australia but the total travel time would have been 45 hours flying Orlando/London /HongKong/Sydney, so we decided on Qantas which is only 23 hours.

Check if you can add on an internal flight with Singapore Airlines. We are using them for our flights, and for a small supplement, you can arrange internal flights within Australia. Actually, we are travelling in the opposite direction to you i.e. Mel to Syd. This also means that you qualify for the same baggage allowance throughout your journey - which is only 20kg btw

Bus to Bournemouth or Poole ? then train to Dorchester. advice welcome
