Fifth Avenue's Best Shopping

3 of 6

For over a century, NYC's fabled Fifth Avenue has been synonymous with wealth, privilege, and luxury. Some aspects have changed since the Great Gatsby days: The mansions and private clubs of the Vanderbilts and Carnegies have given way to massive flagship stores and busloads of visitors. But an address on Fifth Avenue is still highly prestigious and many famed traditions still endure, like the lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, window shopping at Tiffany’s, and tea at the Plaza.
Start Exploring: Begin this almost one mile walk at the outdoor plaza of Rockefeller Center, located between 49th and 50th Streets, just west of 5th Avenue. Explore our Fifth Avenue Walking Tour Guide with interactive map and turn-by-turn directions for the rest of the tour.

A Taste of Chinatown4 of 6
Unlike the Chinatowns of many other cities, which seem to exist largely for the benefit of tourists, Manhattan's Chinatown is a living, breathing neighborhood. In fact, this pocket of downtown Manhattan is like a vibrant mini-city unto itself, complete with its own newspapers, hundreds of restaurants, and around 100,000 residents. Beyond the tasty restaurants, there are colorful galleries and hidden temples, curio shops, and an excellent museum. Though it can overwhelm with its density, don't be afraid to wander down a random side street in order to steal glimpses of everyday life and time-honored customs. Though it might appear seedy, the neighborhood is generally very safe. And remember, Chinatown is best explored with an open mind and an empty stomach.

Start Exploring: Begin this one mile walk at MOCA on Centre Street, and use our Chinatown Walking Tour Guide with interactive map and turn-by-turn directions to explore the area.

Financial District

5 of 6

The southern tip of Manhattan is the oldest part of New York. Here, the Dutch founded the settlement of Nieuw Amsterdam in the seventeenth century, purchasing the territory from local Indians, before surrendering it to the British in 1674. As New York expanded uptown and America became a world power, the city's most historic district became the seat of international finance, home to Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange, and landmark skyscrapers.
Start Exploring: Begin this 1.2 mile walk at the iconic Wall Street Bull, and use our Financial District Walking Tour Guide with interactive map and turn-by-turn directions to explore the area.

Midtown's Best Architecture

6 of 6

The best place to experience New York City's renowned architecture is in a one mile span of Midtown East. No other city features so many significant styles and buildings in such a condensed area: In the span of just a few blocks, you can witness Art Deco splendor, Moorish Revival magnificence, and quintessential glass-curtain modernism. Perhaps no other city possesses such an iconic skyline. Even if its locals don't ever seem to look up, rest assured that they are mighty proud of what surrounds them.
Start Exploring: Begin your 1.3-mile tour at the New York Public Library at 455 5th Avenue, between 41st and 42nd streets, and use our Midtown Walking Tour Guide with interactive map and turn-by-turn directions for the rest of the tour.

Yes, that's true. There weren't enough people interested in the project to make it feasable.

Hey guys,

I'm not on your sailing but will be getting back into NYC on the Jewel 10/21 from the Bahamas. If we win a huge lottery jackpot between now and then, we'll be joining you!

Just wanted to give you a heads up about the MS Bike Race which will close down SEVERAL streets in NYC the day of your sailing...I would hate to hear from someone about having missed the pier for lack of planning to get to the ship on time. I've read briefly through the thread(s) but didn't see anyone posting about this yet...

The race will start at Pier 94, 7:30 am SHARP. Below is a cut/paste from the MS website about this, as well as a link to a photo from last year's race (notice the NCL ship on the left? )

Have a great cruise and who knows, we might join you!

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fb...type=3&theater

Bike MS New York City features the only route allowing participants to circle Manhattan on roads closed to traffic, including the FDR and West Side Highway. Along the route, participants will get to experience seeing the Intrepid Museum, Chelsea Piers, the Battery Park Underpass, the Brooklyn Bridge, United Nations, the Queensboro Bridge and Yankee Stadium! Cyclists can choose to ride 30, 50 or 100 miles. Bike MS New York City is unique in limiting the ride to 5,000 participants, maximizing the opportunity for an exciting and enjoyable ride.

NEW in 2012! You may know what it's like to drive through NYC's Holland Tunnel, but we're sure you've never gotten through it traffic-free! Bike MS NYC is excited to announce that the Holland Tunnel will be a prominent highlight of the Bike MS 2012 extended routes!

30 Mile Ride: For participants of all levels. Experience Manhattan TRAFFIC FREE via the Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive, Harlem River Drive and the West Side Highway. This route is mostly flat and does not have any steep hills.

50 and 100-Mile Ride: Participants riding the extended routes will ride through the Holland Tunnel, traffic-free, and ride on to scenic routes in upstate New York and New Jersey and return on the historic George Washington Bridge.

Thanks for the reminder. We were there last year and it was a mess. Luckily we had a cab driver who would never give up. He turned, twisted, then u-turned, cut across lanes & got us to the pier on time. He got a very nice tip.

Hi Everyone,

I know I'm no longer signed up to go on this cruise, but I found the following information about NYC and interesting things to see and do and thought I would share. Wish I was joining you!

Hidden Treasures of New York City
The first time you visit New York City, you go directly to must–see sites like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and Central Park. But then you return, time and time again, because there’s always something new to discover: a new museum exhibit, a new trendy neighborhood, a new restaurant. Here are a few hidden treasures that should be on your must-see list the next time you visit the Big Apple.

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum – This little treasure near the Brooklyn Bridge offers a thought-provoking history of immigrants living in NYC from approximately 1850 to 1930.

The Cloisters – This branch of the Metropolitan Museum at the northern tip of Manhattan is celebrated for its medieval architecture and flowering gardens.

Bronx Botanical Gardens – Explore inside the landmark glasshouse to see spectacular seasonal exhibitions, a tropical rain forest, a cactus–filled desert and many other plants that can be seen nowhere else in New York.

The Museum of the Moving Image – An entertaining and educational place to learn about the artistry, history and techniques of film. Visitors can read lines from "The Wizard of Oz," escape green-screen disasters and project their heads above iconic costumes.

Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company – A one–of–kind shop to purchase capes, secret identity kits, grappling hooks and more, with all proceeds benefiting a kids' writing center.

Hi Karen

It's wonderful to read a post by you. I'm still in denial that you won't be with us. When the denial stage finally gives way to the anger stage, I will try to forgive you for abandoning us.

We miss you,

John

Thanks John...wish I was going as well! Please do forgive me, and, hopefully, we'll sail again together on another cruise.

Hi Tom! Sorry I didn't see your post until this evening. Welcome to our merry band of sailors!

There is a specific thread to sign up for the rollcall and Meet and Greet (and gift exchange). I was going to give you the link, but I see you've already gone there and posted your names, etc.

Again, welcome aboard (even if it is a little late)!
