2 lawsuits are winding thru the courts, design is somewhat done. Construction could start tomorrow but hey were are on "island time"... Charleston has always been one of the slowest about doing something downtown.

Any guess at taxi fare from West Ashley area hotels? Thinking about the HIE because I have enough points. They offer a park-and-cruise but not transportation.

Friend joining me on Leg 2 will have her car parked at the port and can shuttle me back over.

The taxi was $20.00~we paid $89.00/room and parked right in front of the hotel~no worries~the hotel was clean staff nice and the breakfast was on par with others, juice, coffee, muffins, toast, bagels, etc.

Any thoughts about the Hyatt Place by the airport?

Still looking for taxi fare estimates from West Ashley and maybe the Hyatt Place Airport.

Would like to finalize pre-cruise plans so I can focus on DD's wedding!

The hotel is nice but is right on the edge of industrial/iffy areas. It is near lots of shopping but not really in walking distance.

Thanks so much for that Taxi Fare link!

Looks like HIE to pier would be just over $20, so figure $25 with tip.

Have to be sure they'd let me park for the duration of a B2B if I'm not booking a special rate. If not, I might still book it and just earn more points to cash in some other time.

It is a $15.00 ride from my mom's house in West Ashley which is close to the Best Western Sweetgrass Inn on 1540 Savannah Highway, to the port. I just gave that hotel as a point of reference because I aint telling ya where momma lives.

As a side note, the BW Sweetgrass Inn hasnt had rave reviews recently.

Most hotels will not allow you to park UNLESS you use the special rate. With a B2B I would make sure they knew how long you were going to be away as they might require a 2 night minimum which might make it not worth the price. Personally I would not leave a car at ANY hotel in North Charleston for more than a couple of nights. I would look at the round Holiday Inn/Mt. Pleasant and some parts of West Ashley. Just saying...

I have checked out Park and cruise "deals" at PC for a cruise in Nov. The cost right near the port is upwards of $195 with taxes. I can get a room in Titusville for around $55 with taxes and pay $120 (7 night cruise) for parking at the port. Cheaper and no waiting for a shuttle...

Another thanks for the taxi fare link. We plan to visit son who lives off Sam Rittenberg blvd, leave car there and take a taxi to cruise ship. My guess is we can call the night before and schedule a pickup.

Default Private tours

We will be in Charleston, in October of this year, as a stop on our cruise. Can you recommend any local tour operators for a one day tour of your city?

Charleston is a VERY popular touism destination, and there is a wide variety of tours to choose from. We live just north of the Holy City, and when we have out-of-town guests who want to "do" Charleston, we almost always start with a carriage ride (several good operators to choose from). It gives you a comfortable no-walking overview of much of the historic district, and might give you ideas about what you'd like to go back and see in depth. A minor downside is that to control the carriage traffic, the particular route your driver gets is based on a lottery, so not all rides go, say, to The Battery, or Rainbow Row... but they ALL are interesting and well-narrated.

A boat tour of the harbor, including Ft. Sumpter, "starting point" for what we all call "the War of Northern Aggression" , is a great option...

There is also an excellent Visitor Center, where many organized tours eg Gray Line and others originate, at 375 Meeting Street (8:30 am - 5:00 pm). It's another good starting point, site: http://www.charlestoncvb.com/visitors/

and a good sub-page listing many of the tours, in 14 categories, including "private guides", if that interests you, site: http://www.charlestoncvb.com/visitor...do~3/tours~32/

The Market area is right at the port, so that is a great starting (or ending) point for a self-guided walking tour...

If you repost with some particular area of interest for you, architecture, music, food, history, etc... you will probably get some more specific recommendations.

Hope you enjoy your visit to Charleston!

See, all this internal debate on where I should stay has caused me to miss out on one of the places. The Hampton Inn Patriots Point has rooms on the night I want to stay, but my DD is coming down at the end of the week to join me for Leg 2 of my B2B and they do not have rooms that night.

But the Hampton West Ashley does and they also offer a Snooze, Cruise, Ride deal. Guess I should just go ahead and book something!

Carnival's website says parking is $17/night at the port. Someone who just returned from a cruise said it was $15. Knowing my friend, she's going to want to know. Maybe I should just tell her $17 and she can be pleasantly surprised if it is "only" $15!

Do they do carriage rides in the evenings? When I informed DD that I'd moved her honeymoon cruise from Port Canaveral to Charleston, the first thing she said was "will we be able to go on a carriage ride with those pretty Belgian's pulling?" She was about 6 when we were there for a long weekend, and being a typical little girl, she was (and still is) horse crazy!

I have never paid as the "children" take us to the port/pier so cannot say for sure how much it is but yeah I would go with the $17.
I would book the Hampton.

They do offer evening rides but you need to pre-book,
Again have a great time!

Unfortunately it went from $15 to $17 as of July 1, 2012.

Should you decide to stay in Charleston we do have companies that offer dinner cruises or sunset cruises. They take you out in the harbor to watch the sunset and they have dinner and live music while you tour the bay. I do have the port schedule for Charleston too. I will see if I can find it to post. Hope this helps.

Dean[/quote]

are the sunset cruises mainly for couples??? Me & my daughter seen one that was through sandlappers that we thought looked nice but didnt want to be the only poepl that wernt in love. I know that sounds weird but could you let me know?

And my search for a hotel for me on 10/21 and DD on 10/26 continues.

Want the same hotel so that my other friend who is on Leg 2 but parking at the port can drop us both back at the same hotel.

When I find one for me, it's sold out or double the price on her night. Or it's in a not-so-desireable area.

Getting frustrated.

Hampton Inn West Ashley has cruise parking package with shuttle to and from the port - $118 on my night, $147 for hers. Not as bad as a couple of others I was looking at.

Going to go ahead and book and if I find something in a better area that provides breakfast, parking and shuttle, I'll jump on it.

I won't be out walking around the hotel anyway. My plan is to check in, drive into town, park near the waterfront park, go have my Shrimp & Grits at Fleet Landing, then back to the hotel to just relax.

I personally would not stay there. I'd suggest paying a little more to stay somewhere else.

Any other options that you've tossed around?
