Default Is the Paul Gaugin too formal for me?

I am looking at going with my BFF in January, but I am concerned that the ship might be too formal for me. Not interested in the romance, etc., just want to go and relax and have a good time. I would wear slacks and a jacket for dinner, but don't like to dress up more than that. Are jeans for roaming around the ship? Honestly, I can't decide whether to do this cruise or just do a land vacation in Tahiti. Any thoughts?

There is no need to wear a jacket at dinner on any day of the week. In fact if you do you would be the odd one out!
Casual shirts, golf shirts with collars and Hawaiian patterned shirts are perfectly acceptable. Jeans or shorts during the day are ok too. No jeans at dinner though.
In all my cruises this is the least formal ship I have been on and I have been on several mainstream, luxury and premium lines.

Would suggest that you combine this cruise with a land vacation and like most people who come back I am sure you will say that being on the PG was the best part of the holiday.

Aunt Katy check out the roll calls for your proposed cruise.
Also leaf through the board as there is a lot of information on this cruise, tips etc.

Least formal ship I have ever been on and land vacations are MUCH more money usually.

Actually, Twin we got a really good deal for January at the Sofitel Moorea including half board. Not an over water but otherwise excellent pricing. I think these regions are hurting a bit so offering more value deals.

But of course the PG is the BEST value and the most enjoyable experience as well.

Jeans would be just fine for roaming the ship.

I can not recall ever seeing anyone wear a jacket to dinner although I am sure that a few might on occasion, so no worries there.

As everyone has said, the Paul Gauguin is very relaxed, which fits perfectly with the part of the world you will be visiting.

From the PG Cruises FAQ: "Collared polo or golf shirts are fine for men; a jacket is optional for the Captain's Welcome Reception. Men can wear golf shirts in the dining room. No T-shirts, shorts, or flip-flops are allowed in the dining room, please."

I hardly take long-sleeved shirts, let alone jackets.

Used to for the Captains party, but gave that up a couple of years ago. A lot to pack for 30min of wear.
