Car rental in Maui

We will be in Maui for an overnight stay on Carnival Spirit. We want to rent a car and drive to Kanaapali and Napili the first day then return to the ship for dinner. The next day we'll either drive down the south side or do the road to Hana. Question is where do we park overnight and what will it cost? Is there a better way to do this?

Are at anchor at Lahaina or docked at Kahulia ?
If anchored at Lahaina just take a taxi to Kanaapali . Then you don't have to worry where to park the rental. If in Kahuila then just return the car to the rental company and take one the next day from them.
You could go the Meet 7 Greet for your cruise and find people who are going to the same thing. They might be trying to get group to set up a tour or transfer to these locations.

IF on NCL, I do not agree with the above advice to turn in your car, especially if you are going to Hana. There is FREE parking right outside the Maui gate. An overflow area is to the left and all along the shoreline. With them coming back for "dinner", spaces should be available.

We were on the Carnival Spirit last year and rented cars on each Island. In Maui there is parking at the port (we came back late from the luau). The lot is small but there is overflow too, you can ask the guys around the guard station too, but we had no problem on any of the Islands and no cost involved.

or just take the public bus from Lahaina for $1 each way or the free shuttle to Whaler's Village (in the heart of Kanaapali). That's what we do!

That is good advice for the beach day at Kanaapali, but the OP wants to use the rental car to tour the following day. I am interested in that, too. So, the original question about overnight parking stands.

Or - would it be better to do a self tour on Day 1 - turn in the car & go to the luau. Then on Day 2 take a cab or shuttle to the beach? What is the cost of the cab to/from Kanaapali and are they easy to pick up from the beach back to the ship? This is for when the ship at anchored in Lahaina.
