Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

I am totally new here so forgive me if I am asking this question in the wrong place, which I probably am, but despite reading and reading, including on the Princess website, I can find no specific and consistent information telling or showing exactly what areas are considered "designated." This info is needed for a Jan 2013 Caribbean cruise on Emerald, if that matters.

It surprises me a bit that Princess does not show these areas on their deck plans. Whether a smoker or someone wanting a cabin away from these areas, I would think that many people would be thankful for this information BEFORE they cruise, or even book their cruise.

I am seeking specific information please. For instance does "port side" mean the entire port side? Does the casino mean the entire casino? What about the lounges? I read where someone complained about smoking in Explorers. Any designated area which are not topside? Where? What specific areas topside are allowed?

I am familiar with the layout of 2 other Princess ships (Grand & Golden), so if someone who has been on the Emerald lately could list the areas considered "designated" I should be able to figure out where they are on board, even if I have to reference deck plans. Thank you!

The designated smoking areas are:

Promenade deck, ( the port or starboard side can be at the will of the captain) The astrays are on the wall next to the exit doors. If they are planning on refueling, they switch the port and starboard.

At the aft Terrace pool portside above the pool.

A section of the casino, not the whole casino. Some nights are designated non smoking nights.

There is a room for cigar smoking near the casino.

There is no smoking in the Explorer's lounge.

No smoking in cabins, balconies or dining venues.

It should be noted that some of the islands the Emerald visits, do not permit smoking anywhere in public. Hope this info is of help.:)

We just sailed the golden last week and here were the smoking areas on the golden, deck 6 cigar lounge, deck 7 casino and out the doors right before the casino on starboard side, deck 14 by the neptune pool yet far enough away, however as a smoker I thought the deck 14 area was a bit small and heavy in the smoke smell due to only having 8 tables. However, since all smokers seemed to congragate there with coffee we did have time to visit ALOT with each other and two people did get fined for smoking on their balconies, I think they stated slow on stopping it but have it in gear now so beaware they are on the prowl now! We had three smokers in our cabin and we all said "wow can you imagine how many cigarettes a person would smoke if they were able to smoke on the balconies'? So thank you to Princess for making us leave our cabin and meet some of the greatest people we have ever met on a cruise at the smokers section!:D

We just got back from the "Grand Mediterranean" cruise on the Ruby. We were very happy with the new smoking rules. Smoking was confined to a few specific areas and was never a problem. We did not experience any sign of smoking on Balconies and even the Casino was not bad at all. It appears that there are not as many smokers on the ship as in past cruises.

As I posted before smoking is allowed on the starboard side of the Promenade deck. Unlike cruises before the new policy, there were no ash trays on the tables aft on the Horizon Terrace or forward on the tables in the Calypso Pool. Only ashtrays were on the tables on the port side of the Neptune Pool area so the only Lido deck smoking was there. Can't comment on Sun deck because it is really too cold to be out there in Alaska now.

I posted the above on another thread about the Golden but thought I should also post here. Smoking is also allowed in Players Cigar Bar, the Casino and part of Skywalkers.

IECAL - what ship were you on? We were just on the Star and the AFT area by tradewinds bar on the port side was designated smoking and had "designated smoking area" signs on all tables.
We were on the Golden. Tradewinds is forward of the Neptune Pool on the Sun Deck. On the Golden there were ashtrays on the port side tables by the bar. In addition to no smoking in cabins or in balconies, the main change I saw on the Golden was no smoking at the port side tables by the aft Outriggers Bar on Lido deck. As best as I can remember, before the new policy smoking was allowed in that area on our cruises on the Sapphire, Star, Golden and Grand. Of course on our recent Alaska cruise it was so cold in deck most times that no one was in that area.

I will be on the Golden on 11/7/12. Can anyone who has sailed her recently tell me if smoking is allowed there now? I understand it being cold in Alaska which could be the reason no one was smoking out there.

Patty

Yes, you can smoke on the Golden... Decks 14 and some on Deck 15 (open air decks), as well as on one side of the Promenade deck. Smoking is no longer allowed on balconies, but inside, you can smoke in the Churchill's Cigar Bar, and also in a section of Skywalkers.

Hi All,

Sorry, if this one has been answered before. Looking at a cruise on the Island Princess, I know where we can smoke down on the promenade deck. But would like to know where the smoking IS located on the lido - I'm guessing there is only one location on the lido deck somewhere near the lido pool. Does anyone know if it is forward - toward the lido bar or I thought I read somewhere that it is toward the rear near the bathrooms.

Just trying to figure out which stairwell would be closest to book a cabin on Aloha deck.

Thanks,

Tammy

I would like to know if anyone knows specifically if you can smoke on the aft adult pool on the Carribean? I have booked a cabin for that very reason right outside the door from the pool. (Riviera Deck)

Thank you

Can anyone tell me if there is a designated area for smoking cigars on the island princess. I know they do not have a cigar bar, so would like to know if and where cigar smoking is permitted. Thank you!
Churchill's Lounge on Promenade deck. That is the only place you can smoke cigars and pipes on the Island or Coral.

Just returned from a cruise on Ruby Princess. The smoking policy seemed to work, we avoided internal areas where smoking was allowed never went to the casino or sky walker nightclub. We found the ventilation system was not up to the job, smoke from the casino permeated the shopping area so did not use the shops. The one really irritating feature was on the promenade deck on the bow there is a vent that I think expels air from the casino and it stinks of cigarette smoke very very strong. Everyone like us that walk the promenade deck for exercise has to walk through it. The area's on the promenade deck where people smoke is not so much of an issue it is not so concentrated and you can always hold your breath while you walk past. This could be cured by extending the trunking so it expels out over the sea and not onto the deck. This has put me off booking with Princess again, someone earlier said (a smoker) if you don't like it don't book with Princess. I don't like it and I won't be booking with Princess again until they improve the ventilation system and stop expelling air full of smoke onto the promenade deck where people walk for exercise.

DW and I are non smokers. We were on the Coral and the Golden last month. We had no problems with the new policy. There appeared to be a reduction in the public areas with ash trays from past cruises and less smoke in most public areas. We know on those ships that there is smoking on the starboard side of the Promenade deck and the port side on Lido deck. There were not many smokers and no issues for us. Princess is also offering smoking cessation programs for crew members with incentives to stop smoking.

I think this new policy is a step in the right direction. Being from NYC area (USA) seems like it has taken quite a while to make these changes. I don't smoke, never have, and can remember when there smoking and non-smoking areas in restaurants. The smoky smell always wafted over to the non-smoking section in most places. This is where I wish Princess would improve. Instead of having a lounge cut down the middle with one side designated smoking and the other banning smoking, have a designated closed smoker's lounge. From my non-smokers's point of view, I prefer this. Smokers may feel isolated or excluded. I don't know. What do others think?

I also wish they would improve ventliation, air purification, etc. those types of improvements are beneficial for all.

Forgive me in advance for not reading the 21 pages of smoking comments (I can imagine how a lot of them are anyway)!

Regarding smoking in the casino --- on Carnival they changed their policy so that people can only smoke in the casino if they are playing. That limits the people clustering there just for the purpose of smoking. That's the policy at any rate. I'll see how that works on our Legend sailing next weekend.

Is the casino on Princess a full smoking zone, or only for players - and then only in certain areas? The reason I ask is because I can easily spend a few hours in there each evening, and hope to not earn a sore throat or pick up too much of a stench. Our sailing next month (Thanksgiving) on the Caribbean Princess will be our first with Princess. I am sure we'll enjoy it!!

REALLY looking forward to our two Celebrity sailings in December, as I know that their casinos are TOTALLY smoke free... SWEET !!

On our Caribbean Princess cruise, we walked through the casino everyday from the Princess theater and never experienced a stench. Smoking is limited to one side of the casino. Formal night there is no smoking in the casino at all. Enjoy your cruise.

Thanks.

I just took a peek at the deck plans and saw where the walk-thru is. Apparently the smaller part of that divided casino (starboard side) is all slots. The table games, more slots, and the bar make up a majority (port side) of the casino.

Can I assume that the "side" of the casino where smoking is permitted is that larger part?

Does anyone know if there are individual tables which are smoke free (on non-formal nights)?

THANKS!

We play tables all the time. We have never seen anyone smoking at the tables. We are smokers and would not think of doing so. I recall small no smoking signs at the tables even on smoking nights.

That's very interesting. A (generally) smoking casino where the table games are non-smoking? I'd be all for that!

On the Sapphire in May the smoking area was by the walk-through. There were some slots there. Tables, cashier, bar were in the center. Most of the slots were on the opposite end. Smoking was allowed at the tables on the nights that were not non-smoking nights.

No smoking on formal nights? Thank you for that info. I will get in some time at the casino after all on my upcoming Ruby Princess cruise if they do the same.
