The only thing I could think of to make a balcony more private would be to employ towels, but I don't know how you could attach them. I haven't felt the need.

If you want complete privacy, stay inside your room.

Same if you are at home and have a backyard. Stay in the house.

I believe you've missed the point. I never said I wanted complete privacy. I was just wondering how many others had encountered nosy or voyeuristic neighbors on a cruise, and what they had done (if anything ) to discourage it. And sitting on the balcony of a cruise ship is not the same as being at home in the backyard.

Talking

You mean I can't play my bagpipes on the balcony. Sometimes I can't sleep after they close the Disco and the sound of bagpipes makes me sleep better.

I can see the OP's point! On the NCL PEARL u would have to lean around, so someone would need to be well motivated. I'm on RCI EOS next week and the dividers between the balconies are opaque. So that reduces privacy. I have seen something that might work, and its going to drive me nuts til I find it...when I do, I'll post it  it has to fold, be light not too bulky....hmmmmm...brb...

The only times I have pondered this are when looking out from our starboard verandah directly into one of the apartments at the Princes Wharf at Auckland in New Zealand, very much you see, I see, we all see and lets wave and comtemplating the views of aft balconies from the bridge cams of ships parked behind.

I've never been too concerned about having absolute privacy on our balcony. I have breakfast out there in the morning in my robe, usually spend an hour or two out there reading every afternoon, and in the evening we'll sit out there before going to bed to gaze up at the stars and talk (quietly) about our day. None of those are activities that need 100% privacy.

Occasionally I'll stand at the railing and watch the water and if I happen to glance left or right I might see my balcony neighbor if they are also standing at their railing and if they're looking in my direction I would smile and say "hello" but that's the extent of it. I'm not craning my neck to peek over at them. I have noticed the reflection of balcony neighbors on the glass, but don't stare at them and if they notice me on our balcony and want to stare I couldn't care less.

I can't imagine how one would go about making their balcony more private anyway. Like a PP said, if you want 100% privacy go inside and shut the drapes.

I'm having trouble getting a picture in my mind where I could be sitting on my balcony and see someone in an adjacent bacony reflected in the balcony front glass. If the partitions go all the way out to the glass (on every ship I've been on it does) there doesn't seem to be an optical path between my eye to the glass to someone elses's eye.

If I saw someone reflected in the glass, most likely it's me!

We were on a river cruise last spring and our tiny balcony was divided from neighbors by barriers. The balcony was too small to use so privacy was not an issue, but the barriers did cut down on our view out of the windows.

As Keith said 'they are what they are.' I don't expect privacy any more than I would do so sitting out on my own terrace at home.

My husband would bring plywood sheets, nails and a hammer, and would build solid walls to enclose our balcony. After all, it is a rampant problem on cruise ships and everyone needs to do whatevery they can to protect themselves. The lack of balcony privacy is such a serious epidemic that I understand the that UK's Channel 4 is going to do an expose on the problem.

Fortunately, we've never had the problem of balcony peekers to date, but if we did in the future, my boyfriend would just stand out there naked to greet them.

I wait until the sun is in such a position that I can be assured that my neighbor will be able to see me reflected in the glass partition fronting the balcony....then I waltz out naked...they beat a hasty retreat, scarred for life and I kick back and enjoy my solitude for the balance of the trip

even better if they were a potential balcony smoker (or bagpipe player for that matter) *laffin*

swsfrail! I am laughing so hard my stomach hurts!

Standing out naked also sounds fun.

Add an accordian and a cigar to the bagpipes!

We had two verandas on the star, the front veranda walls were "cut" at an angle on the sides so you had a partial view of the neighbors veranda and could see across to all when standing at the rail, we met and visited with the GREATEST neighbors! Oh, and the bridge was right above the front veranda which became a hot topic with the neighbors as to what the crew has witnessed

So, do you just accept that, or do you do anything to gain a bit more privacy from potential voyeurs, even if you're just sitting out there reading a book? What methods have you tried, and how well did they work? And please, no complaints about smokers, or bagpipe players. Those should be saved for a different thread. Thanks.
We never had a problem with our neighbors and on all 13 of our cruisers we have always had a balcony. When we are on our baloncy the only time we probably see our neighbors is in the early morning when we are standing at the railing drinking coffee and they are too. Then its a pleasant "good morning."

Whether I am reading a book, taking a nap or just watching the world go by I don't feel like I have a lack of privacy and don't feel the need to place some type of barrier in place to give me anymore privacy than I already have.

I'm still trying to figure out how to make your balcony more private, even if you wanted to. Towels? Sheets? a tent? The mind boggles--way too much trouble for little gain.
