Default Leaving the Princess Cays compound

I'm curious as to what, if anything, there is to do outside the Princess Cays compound. I've search but haven't found much.

I've read where some people go south along the beach and find some destroyed houses and some graves. I've read where some people apparently left the compound and there were some vendors selling souvenirs somewhere. How many vendors? What exactly is there outside the compound gates?

If someone were to take a folding bike, would there be flat and relatively smooth roads to ride on and somewhere to go?

Really not too much outside of the Compound.
On one Cruise we took a Princess Tour of the Island.
Rather expensive!!!

As we recall, it took us a while to get to the towns.
Road was quite good.

This is our favorite place to walk to. I don't think bike tires would survive it. It's about 3.5-4.0 miles each way. We once did this and didn't see another person for 4 hours.

We like to walk and walked outside the compound by going left? north? up the beach and then turning onto a road. We walked several miles and ended up coming into the compound on the other end.

I wanted to find the graves, but didn't. We didn't see what I'd call a town or shopping area either, did see some ruined houses. It was very interesting.

Since we left the compound by walking up the beach a ways, it wasn't bike friendly. Once on the road it would have been ok, and there may be a way to get to the road from within the compound--I think there is on the other side--but I'm not sure.

We took a tour called "Behind Princess Cays" when we were on the Crown in 2011. It was a bus ride in a nice, airconditioned bus..all over the Island. We learned how to weave straw. We were taken to several scenic stops. We walked for a bit..saw historic churches..were going to meet the Sherrif..but he was busy. Very unusual on the Island. We had lunch in a not fancy..but clean..restaurant. We saw the prep for the junkaru celebration at Christmas..We saw the caves the locals get into when Hurricanes come...like storm cellars...
MEMORIES...sweet, lovely people. Interesting tour. Lovely island. Homes..for the most part..small, well taken care..clean. Bright sunlight. Beautiful. First time I felt like I had really seen the Bahamas.
it cost about $100 pp and lasted about 7 hours. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Smile outside

If you leave the princess cays area though the back gate you will need photo id and your cruise card to get back in. The vendors are right outside the gate. The island tour is really fun.
