Default Knnew who the politician was before ever clicking on the article!

A word of caution! If you see a TV camera, anywhere within 100 yards of yourself...Be on alert.....There is a very good chance Chuckie will knock you over to get in front of it.

The only word that applies to this guy these days is....boring.

I think the legal system will work out any difficulties that have arisen with the last few months with various ship incidents.

Chuckie...to gat another junket.....

Oh lucky us!! Factually speaking, Shumer's nothing but a camera hogging vote whore. Unfortunately for us and to his benefit, our political system is based on name recognition and not acomplishment.

Congress needs to get their house in order before going after anyone else, they cannot not even agree to disagree.

Default It's good to have checks and balances

I will not comment on the personality or agenda of the senator involved.

However, it is always good to have a legal system of checks and balances in place to protect consumers and keep corporations at bay.

Most of you are probably too young to remember the old days when the major banks clearly abused credit card customers and acted in whatever way they wanted until the Fair Credit Act was enacted.

The ability of being able to dispute a charge and receive a credit on your account comes from that law -- not from the goodness of the banks wanting to help people.

Kind regards,

Gunther and Uta

Our country is going bankrupt and has serious problems to address and once again a politician is wasting time on minor things instead of doing what really needs to be done........

People, don't be blinded by your politics. Schumer may be a blowhard. He may be in a different party than you. But if he can goad the cruise lines into adopting a cruisers bill of rights, that's a good thing for all of us.

All it will do is raise the price of a cruise. It is definitely NOT a good thing to get an ambulance chasing politician involved in my vacation. Gee I wonder why there are no major cruise ships registered in the USA???

But if you feel all corporations are out to kill their customers there will be no convincing you. After all, no company ever went out of business because of poor service.

If you don't like the cruise line don't sail, it's not like it's a necessity.

Default A Comparison

Compare cruise prices in the USA and those in England. England "protects" their citizens against just about every concievable nightmare.

Me, I will pay USA prices, thank you government, but no thank you.

Side note, this is not one party or another. It applies to every elected official in the US. They have one job. No matter what you might here or see, they have one job: Get re-elected. how do they do that?
Have you ever seen the number of pieces of legislation, rules, regulations, guidlelines, restrictions, etc every politician (NO POLITICS HERE....everyone of them)...they introduce every sesson?

Leave us alone to determine what cruise line we will sail, when we will sail, how much money we will spend, and what recourse we choose should something occur.

Probably about as good as the Airline bill of rights worked out for their passengers

The only teeth the airline bill has is $$ penalties for violations, and evan at that, only applies to U.S. Airlines. No cruiselines are U.S. companies, so even if such a bill was adopted it would be toothless. This is purely political posturing - apparently the only skill Washington (both parties) have mastered.

There are no cruise ships registered in the US so cruise lines can avoid US regulations and taxes. I don't think that is a good thing.

Consumer protections for US cruise passengers would be a good thing!

I think the cruise ships are inspected by the US Coast Guard before they are cleared to sail out of US ports. So it looks like they need to follow US rules and regs to at least some extent.

Absolutely correct. And also by the CDC for health inspections

Yes, some but not near enough. Not that I have any confidence that Schumer will follow up and actually do anything. Time will tell but I think it likely is a sound byte because of recent issues that have been highlighted in the media.

There is no way that we will ever agree. I will make my points knowing it will never change your mind that the US federal government is the savoir of everything. The lawyers will force the cruise industry to do far more than any regulation ever could and that's an even worse outcome.

Taxes will force an increase in prices and lower profits. US regulations are usually a joke. You believe regulation="nothing bad will ever happen", which of course is not true. The Staten Island Ferry that crashed into the pier in New York is heavily regulated by everyone. "Jan 9, 2013 – At least 57 injured as ferry crashes into Manhattan's Pier 11". Just Google it and see how great your regulations are.
