Very informative blog and beautiful pictures. We may rent bikes in Melbourne - I had not seen any information on them previously posted. Thanks!

Thanks for your kind words kccrzr. Melbourne is very flat, so it's a great place to go riding bikes. And the bike path goes along the shorefront in both directions from the port - in one direction you have Williamstown (http://www.williamstowninfo.com.au/) and the other St. Kilda (http://www.stkildamelbourne.com.au/). I don't know much about Williamstown but St. Kilda is fabulous, with Acland Street, Luna Park, the Esplanade hotel (known locally as 'the Espy') and much more. No matter what you do, I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Default Great Insight

We are booked B2B2B on the Voyager of the Seas in February, and while we've circumnavigated Australia, we've never been to New Zealand so your sharing is very helpful--THANKS, Giulio!

Default question !

We are looking at doing either the northern or southern route of Australia after a 14 day cruise to New Zealand....is one route better as far as normally
expecting calmer waters? All the cities look amazing to visit, and chances of getting back to the other side of the world are slim, so we would like to see
all we can on a vacation.

thanks for any info....I am reading the blog as well...amazing photos!
and so much information..greatly appreciate anyone who takes the time to do this sort of detailed review

We are very interested in visiting Hobbiton during our Soltice Transpacific cruise in April 2014. We stop at Auckland but not Tauranga. We think we would need to take a ships tour to Hobbiton because of the distance involved so we don't have any risk of missing the ship. Would it be worth the travel time? Would the drive there and back be interesting and scenic or just kind of dull? Opinions appreciated.

Hi newcruisers04, Glad you like the blog and the photos. We couldn't find anywhere that gave us all the info we were wanting, as well as good photos (I'm a photographer, so that's the first thing I notice!), so I set out to make amends!

As for your query about north/south and calmer waters, I'd be taking an educated guess and saying the northern waters might be a bit calmer. This is due to the presence of Papua New Guinea and so many of Indonesia's islands in rather close proximity to northern Australia, whereas there is nothing between the south of Australia and Antarctica except the Southern Ocean. I had a bit of a look around on Google but couldn't really find anything stating one or the other. Perhaps start a thread on Cruise Critic and ask the question.

Ciao, and happy cruising!

Thumbs up

Hi MrCruising we have enjoyed going onto your blogs. We have already sailed on Rhapsody Oct.2010 and Radiance Dec.2011. Loved both of our trips. So now we are off on the Voyager of the Seas 9th Nov. just 10 weeks away. Really learnt a great deal from your very informative VOS blog. I feel really excited. The menus you showed and of course all the fantastic photos makes us think we must do a little more exercise before we head off. I am sure I will not be able to resist all of those yummy delights. DH just went and bought the exercise bike out into the family room looks like business. Thanks for all the info and we will keep our eyes open for more of your most interesting cruises.

Hi keenmolly, I'm glad you like the blog posts and thanks for your kind words. I love doing them and being able to share with others our great experiences. We are cruising on Rhapsody in November and can hardly wait! Radiance, which we loved, was our first cruise and I believe they are quite similar, so, like you, the exercise bike will be getting a workout...hang on, I don't have an exercise bike! I might have to take up jogging!
As for Voyager, she's a great ship and you'll love it. Then again, it's a cruise - of course you'll love it!
Ciao...

My sister and her husband did the exact cruise on the Solstice. We have been on the Solstice twice and loved it. We went 4 years ago and did the Sun Princess and went to a couple of the same ports but a few different.
Dunedin - private tour of the Moreaki boulders and northern coast north of Dunedin. Best excursion ever.
Wellington - walked to the museum and saw the giant squid and did the cable car to the top of the hill and walked around the rose gardens. Long walk and it was awesome.
Taraunga - walked around the top of the mountain by the ship. Awesome pictures.
Auckland - private tour of the black beaches with the birds nesting along the rocks. Awesome......it is about an hours drive from the ship.
Melbourne - did not go.
Sydney - stayed two nights and went to the Taraunga Zoo by ferry and walked around the city and went to the Sydney Opera House and gardens.
Awesome and also went to Sydney Wilflife. Saw some awesome animals native to Australia.
Happy sailing.

It's good to hear you enjoyed your time Down Under. There are many weird and wonderful animals here - did you see a wombat? They are my favourite!

Our daughter will love seeing them, we are traveling to Sydney for a NZ cruise next March to April then sight see and continuing on with the Transpacific. She and husbands sister are going up to the Zoo.
