Summer palace Beijing

It is a fair way out and a very large area. You need time to look at all of it and go on the various boat trips/transfers. There is so much to see in Beijing, so if you can't devote at least half a day to visit I would personally go to Hutongs, Forbidden city or some of the other attractions.

Need help to know if this is a must see as it seems hard to fit it in as we are doing an overnight from the port? Thoughts?

We did a 21 day tour of China that included a river cruise. We went to the Summer Palace. It was interesting, but a bit West of the city.

I would not recommend that it would be worth a dash from the port. Also, there is more important stuff to see in Beijing.
