Thanksgiving 2015 cruise on Conquest

This started off as a totally different cruise. While on Breeze Thanksgiving 2014, I booked a cruise on Victory that was scheduled to port at Half Moon Cay. After booking, I immediately booked a cabana and thought all was good. Well, shortly after our Breeze cruise was over, the itinerary was changed and Half Moon Cay no longer part of it. Dang! I called Carnival and without any rebooking charges, our Thanksgiving 2015 cruise was moved to the Conquest. We had cruised to Ocho Rios before but that was 8 years ago so it felt like a new port. Cozumel and Grand Cayman are great ports so I felt we had a good itinerary. Fast forward to November 21, 2015….

My family of five includes me, my DH, our two DDs (13 & 15) and my mom. We packed our SUV to the gills and proceeded south to Daytona Beach. I thought it would be less stressful to break up the 11 hour drive to Fort Lauderdale from South Carolina. The skies darkened and rain poured down as we pulled into our parking spot at EconoLodge in Daytona Beach. This casual and clean hotel had a pool and hot tub overlooking the beach which unfortunately due to the lightning we never used. Papa Johns delivered our two rooms pizza for dinner and we called it a night.

Next morning, we grabbed some continental breakfast (pastries, cereal, juice and coffee) then hit the road for Port Everglades. We made decent time until we took the exit for the port off of the 595. Yikes, the cars were creeping into the port and it took over 45 minutes to get to a porter at the ship. Never had that happen before. Fortunately we had Faster To The Fun which expedited us past lines of passengers going through security, then lines of passengers waiting to get their Sign and Sail cards. Got on board about 2:00 and headed to our neighboring rooms.

We had stateroom 7434 which had a “bowling alley” balcony and my mom and DDs had the room next door, 7430 which had a regular balcony. When our room attendant Gerry (pronounced Gary) opened the dividing door, we had the biggest balcony I have ever encountered. Nice! Throughout the cruise, we would access each other’s rooms using the balcony instead of the hallway. Easy and private. We were happy with our rooms and Gerri was a wonderful attendant. We asked for ice in a big bucket as well as a small and he made sure we had plenty throughout the day. He called us all by name and was consistently professional. I didn’t get to know his assistant but he was always smiling and cheerful. We hurried to Fish n Chips for some ceviche and bouillabaisse which I love. Although they were getting ready to shut down, they provided what I needed and we chowed down.

Muster was pushed off about 30 minutes and when DH and I arrived to station H, we were at the front of the line. We stood quietly but I guess there were some noisy passengers about 10 lines away because during our wait for muster to begin, then during muster, then after muster waiting to be excused, a black haired female muster coordinator would shout out “no talking, this is important, you have to be quiet”. At the end of each barking order a quiet, half-hearted “please” might be added, but it was beyond anything I have ever encountered during muster. From what I heard of the noisy passengers, her stiff commands were unwarranted and it felt more like she was on a power trip. Our station H was finally excused last and we managed our way back to our room to freshen our drinks.

I found my mardi gras beads and the extra I had brought along in case others from our roll call meet n greet were without. Got to the Sky Bar by Pizza Pirate and stood with beads in hand looking around the bar area for others to recognize the beads. After about 15 to 20 minutes I decided that either we got there too late due to the late dismissal from muster or it just wasn’t going to happen. Oh well. Went down to the room and watched sail away from our huge balcony with mom and my DDs. The weather had cleared and we waved and cheered to the bystanders watching us depart from the beach by the channel.

I cleaned up for dinner then DH and I hit the Alchemy Bar for a martini tasting. We got seats at the bar and Katya our mixologist (her first name is longer, but Katya is her nick name) took great care of us. We enjoyed sharing a tasting of four different cocktails, my favorite being The Fiery Tropical Passion Martini. This drink had Patron Tequila, Patron Citronage, spicy mango puree and fresh citrus. Yes it had some heat but it wasn’t overwhelming. My DH’s fav was Caribbean Manhattan which tasted a little like coca-cola. This drink had Makers Mark Bourbon, Sweet Vermouth, spiced brown sugar syrup and bitters. All the drinks were tasty and the tasting was a great way to try more than one.

We met my mom and the DDs at the Monet dining room and proceeded to our table 371. This booth table worked well with my mom sitting at the end. Our wait staff was wonderful. Raz (his nick name) was our head waiter, made sure we were well taken care of. His assistant Daniel and Agnes did a great job and would take a little time out to chat every so often. Shanna was our bar server and she would come by to chat even when we didn’t need anything. I appreciated their friendliness and professionalism, which is something I have come to expect out of the crew on Carnival ships. So far, I have not been disappointed (except for Hati at Guest Services which I will detail later in this review). I have read some negative comments about the American Table menu and the slow service that accompanies it, but I have to say I was very pleased with it. Our dishes were presented very well, tasty and just the right portion size in my opinion. If I wanted more of something I could ask for it but I don’t need a huge amount of food to make me feel like I got my money’s worth. Timing-wise, we were done with dinner usually around 9:30 to 9:45 (late seating) with the only anomaly being the night the waiters danced. Speaking of that, we agreed at our table that the dancing was not necessary for us to have a good time. Since it dragged out dinner and we were late to our show it was a bit of an annoyance. Just our two cents…

After dinner my DH and I decided to watch “The Night at the Museum 2” at the Dive In Theatre on Lido. Our youngest DD wanted to swim and watch the movie so we skipped “Epic Rock”. My mom and oldest DD wanted to relax so they retired to their room. I loved watching the movie while the ship was travelling to our first port. The movement of the stars across the sky and the breeze added an extra element of excitement to watching a movie.

I woke up on our first Sea Day at 6:50 expecting our room service breakfast to arrive at the scheduled time between 7 and 7:15. Nothing by 7:30 so I called Room Service and they found our order but I had forgotten to put down our room number. Oops! Got breakfast around 8:30. One of my favorite moments on a cruise is having a light breakfast and a hot cup of coffee sitting on my balcony. The sheer relaxation of it, knowing I don’t have to rush out the door makes me wind down a few more notches. I noticed the room service breakfast choices no longer include salmon with capers (we had a moment of silence for it’s passing) but I was happy with my fresh sliced melon, chocolate muffin and plain yogurt.

My DH and I donned workout clothes and ran around the track on the Spa Level for 15 minutes then got a workout with weights in the gym. Feeling quite virtuous, we changed clothes and with the rest of our group, had Sea Day Brunch in the Monet dining room. We were pleasantly surprised that our wait staff from dinner was also our wait staff for brunch. I had steak and eggs which was very tasty. When we got back to our room, we discovered that my DH’s rental tux had been delivered. Elegant night is a go! My youngest DD decided to check out the kids club, Circle C so I walked her to their meeting place. As soon as she got to chatting with other teens, I received the “please go away now, I’m good” look, so I scampered away.

My DH found us lounge chairs away from the noisy Lido deck but it was near the smoking section. Unfortunately we got whiffs of cigar smoke which wasn’t pleasant, but since chairs were at a premium we couldn’t move. Maybe if the smoking area was at the very aft of the ship then no one would be affected by the smoke. Around 3 pm we went to tea in the Monet dining room. It was decorous as usual but we noticed that the goodie cart only came around once. Not that I needed the extra calories, but I would have liked the option to indulge. My DH and I hit the adult only hot tub which was fairly serene. No kids jumping in and swimming around. After a relaxing soak, we grabbed a slice from Pizza Pirate (arugula and prosciutto, yum!) and headed to the room to clean up for dinner. Of course we had to have photos done which was busy, then we grabbed a cocktail at Alchemy Bar. Dinner was wonderful as usual with lobster being the star. Back in the room we changed into comfy clothes and watched “Jurassic World” while my youngest DD swam. She had met a bunch of fun kids at Circle C and hung out with a few in the pool. Once again, it was great to watch a movie out on the Lido deck. Tomorrow is Ocho Rios!

It has been 8 years since we visited Ocho Rios. That time we climbed Dunns River Falls and had lunch at Scotchies. We still wanted lunch at Scotchies, but we wanted to try something new so I checked out the Jamaica board on Cruise Critic. The Blue Hole was an excursion I hadn’t heard of and it wasn’t offered by Carnival, so I investigated further. Liberty Tours kept coming up with positive reviews so I booked an excursion to the Blue Hole with them. Ricardo of Liberty Tours was on top of all of our communication, even calling me at home to make sure we were set to go.

When we arrived at port, my DH and I noticed that security has been ramped up. Officials with clipboards took down our information and designated a spot for us to wait. Michelle from Liberty Tours met us and we joined her in her car. We were the only party she was in charge of, which made for a more personal excursion. Michelle drove us through Ocho Rios, giving us a brief overview of history, economics and life in general.

The drive took about 35 minutes, the last twenty on extremely pot-holed roads. As we pulled up to the Blue Hole parking lot, Michelle called out to one of the guides. Glenn was assigned to us and he was fantastic! He kept a careful watch on all of us, making sure that we were secure in our footing as we climbed up the falls. My mom stayed at the lower bridge and watched us. I wish there would have been easier access to the water for my mom, but there wasn’t. My mom was fine with her perch so the four of us proceeded to the falls. Glenn took tons of pictures of us and video. The Blue Hole is one of the prettiest spots I have ever seen, surreal like a movie set. The water was cold but we all got used to it after five minutes. The last jump was twenty feet up and my youngest DD and my DH decided to brave it, twice! By this time we were ready for lunch. I tipped and thanked Glenn then we headed back down the mountain in Michelle’s comfortable car.

My youngest DD wanted a coconut to drink so we stopped at a roadside stand. Michelle made sure they charged us a fair rate of $3, and we made our way to Scotchies. We had eaten at Scotchies eight years prior and had the restaurant to ourselves. Now after Anthony Bourdain and the rest of Food Network descended upon it, Scotchies was now a happening place. Fortunately we had Michelle. She got us a table when there didn’t seem to be any, waitress service and immediate parking. This woman knows everyone! We dined on jerk chicken, yummy fried bread and rum punch. An orange cat kept circling looking for scraps. After a quick stop in town for t shirts and a bottle of Appleton rum, we bid Michelle good bye with hugs and a sizable tip.

Once on board, we rested then cleaned up for dinner. My DH and I had drinks at the Alchemy Bar. Katya made me a Basil Drop which was yummy. Dinner was great and the service on point. My mom started to not feel well due to the rocking of the ship as it left Ocho Rios. She turned in early as we did as well since we had Grand Cayman tomorrow.

Woke up at 6:45 for room service and we were still moving into port. The water looked choppy and my mom was still feeling under the weather so she decided to stay on board to rest. My DH, myself and both DDs were escorted to the tender, thanks to FTTF and took the ten minute ride over to Georgetown.

Our excursion connection, Kerrie from Soto’s met us and informed us that the marine police had shut down Stingray City due to choppy water. She suggested taking a taxi to one of the beach places along Seven Mile Beach. We did this the last time we visited Grand Cayman (thanks to the evil choppy water) so we decided to revisit the beach restaurant, Royal Palms. The cab ride there was $4 per person and then entry to Royal Palms was $2 per person. I don’t remember there being an entry charge last time. We got beach chairs by the water for $10 per person and didn’t need an umbrella. The surf wasn’t as strong as last time so we were able to use our snorkel gear to explore the sea life near shore. The clouds were in and out but it was nice to just relax on the beach.

My DH and I shared a bucket of 5 beers ($30) and nibbled on spicy wings and conch fritters. All in all, we probably spent the same amount of money that we would have on the excursion to Stingray City. Cabs were waiting to take us back to port and we decided to pick up a t shirt or two while we were waiting in line for a tender. Once on board, we checked on my mom who was still resting. Our room attendant, Gerry had chatted with her while they cleaned the room and asked if she needed anything. She said she was fine and we both agreed that Carnival has some of the nicest, friendliest staff.

My DH and I decided to hit the adults only hot tub. While soaking, we chatted with another couple that we had met while at Royal Palms (small world!) then we hit our room for a nap. I woke up thinking “is room service delivering breakfast?” then the next thought was “dinner? Did we miss it?” I thought we had slept till the next day but that hadn’t happened. We cleaned up and went to dinner in the MDR. I had ox tongue (so-so) prosciutto ruffles (yum) and spare ribs (yummy, but messy) then a s’mores parfait (very rich). My mom wanted to go to “The Brits” so she and I did that while my DH and oldest DD strolled around the ship. My youngest DD was happy to hang with her “peeps” from Circle C. My mom and I had a fun time at the show then we retired to our respective rooms. My youngest DD strolled in around 12:30 after her sister went looking for her. We told her that we worry when she doesn’t come back when we expect her to. She understood and apologized. We all went to sleep.

Next day was Cozumel. We nibbled on room service breakfast as we contemplated our excursion. Intro to Scuba Diving through Carnival sounded great but I was concerned about my mom. I had come to find out that we were expected to don our over 30 pound scuba gear with tank and then walk down stairs into the surf. I’m a personal trainer and I was concerned for myself so thinking about my 77 year old mom struggling made me worry. I spoke with Guest Services on the ship and they said if my mom didn’t want to do it, we would be reimbursed the fee. After getting to the meet point at port, we discussed it further with the rep at the Sunset Beach Bar. My mom decided to forgo scuba and would watch us from the restaurant.

After our Intro to scuba class, we got fitted up with our gear. My mom was hanging out at a shaded table in the sand, cheering us on. Believe me, it was a hard couple steps down and into the surf with extra weight on your body! We went over more scuba details then the tour began. I started acclimating (holding my nose and lightly blowing out) to clear my ears of pressure and it worked! I got down to 28 feet along with my family and we were treated to schools of colorful fish, a moray eel, a sting ray and a sea snake. Half way through, my youngest DD was experiencing ear pain so she went to the surface. We had two guides for our party of four so one went up with her and the other monitored the rest of us. All in all, it was a wonderful experience and worth the effort and money. We had a tasty lunch at my mom’s table (not included in the excursion cost) and then we were taxied back to port. Of course we had to shop and I found t-shirt cover ups for me and my sister and a vendor made a string bracelet with my nephew’s name woven in. He created it in less than ten minutes!

We got back to the ship and did our usual hot tub/pizza ritual. Dinner was good but not as impressive as the other nights. As I mentioned earlier in this review, the waiters dance was okay, but we all thought it should be dropped. My mom and I were almost late to the “Diva” show, which was fun to see. My DH and oldest DD watched “Pitch Perfect 2” and my youngest DD hung out with her Circle C friends.

Last Sea Day our room service breakfast arrived ten minutes early. No big deal but the server apologized. We hung out on the balcony sipping coffee and gazing out at the ocean. I hit the gym for a quick workout then cleaned up for sea day brunch. I had the Chicken Alla Diavolo and it was very good. Since I worked out, I had the Carmel Cheesecake as well. Oink. My DH and I headed to the Sun Deck for some tanning time.

Around 2:00 my DH and I made our way to the Alchemy Bar. Earlier in the cruise, Katya said she had two seats left for her Mixologist class which was being held on the last sea day. We signed up ($15 per person) and we were glad we did. Katya instructed us in bar etiquette and we watched as she created drinks. We helped, kind of, by shaking the drinks and then having generous samples. A couple of the drinks were the cucumber one and the spicy pineapple chipotle and the Remedy. We also tried strawberry infused vodka and St. Germain elderflower liquor. The class lasted close to two hours but it was fun and Katya was a great instructor.

Sadly, we cleaned up for our last MDR meal. I missed the escargot that is usually on the menu. I ordered the Warm Chocolate Melting Cake rare this time (last time it was overcooked) and although I was brought two, neither one was gooey like previous cruises. Oh well, I barely fit into my clothes as is. Double oink. We packed our bags and got them in the hall before the pick up time. Champagne on the balcony capped off our last night.

Debarkation started off with room service breakfast. My DH left as soon as the liquor pick up was available. We were scheduled to debark at 7:30 and with a 12 hour drive ahead of us, we didn’t want to waste time. Unfortunately, Carnival has this system now that instead of delivering your purchased liquor the night before, they now have you come to a dining room where packages are set up in no particular order. One person was trying to find my DH’s single bottle of rum and couldn’t accomplish this task. After 7:30, I went to the dining room, found my DH who was not happy. I went to Guest Services, explained to Hati what was happening. Unlike all other Carnival employees, her attitude was devoid of concern. She suggested I contact the store in Ocho Rios regarding my bottle. I showed her my letter from Carnival and said when Carnival accepted my bottle as we came back on board in Ocho Rios, it was now between me and Carnival, not the store. She asked me how much the bottle was, I said $25. She said the best she could do was refund the $25. My DH said what about our time and the fact that we now couldn’t get off board using our FTTF that we paid Carnival for. Hati was unmoved. I accepted the $25 but I do think Carnival should have given some OBC on a future cruise for their mix up and delay for us. Hati’s lack of concern left us with a bad taste at the end of a really fun cruise.

Our drive back was extra long and after 13 hours we pulled into our driveway. I hope next cruise Carnival will either go back to the previous liquor delivery method the night before or be better organized. I know we were not the only passengers affected by this snafu. Other than this, our cruise was fun and I think Conquest is a good ship. We are scheduled to sail on Conquest in May 2016!

Thank you for reading my review! If I can, I will try to answer questions. Merry Christmas!

Thanks for your review, a fun read :)

This will be our 3rd cruise on Conquest and we are driving to Port Everglades and parking at the port for the first time. What time did you arrive at the port when you experienced the backed up traffic? We are Platinum and cruising with 2 others who are FTTF so that should help us when we get inside. But any tips you have for our port arrival is appreciated!

Thanks Denise! We were in line off of the 595 from about 1:00 to 1:45. This is the latest we have ever arrived at port in our cruising career:eek:. Our usual arrival time is around 11:00 and we have never encountered such a line up at that time. Once you drop off your bags with the porter it is a fairly quick process if you are Platinum or FTTF.

Also, we parked at the port and my DH had to circle around the parking structure for a good 15 minutes before he found a parking spot. That hasn't happened when we arrive earlier to port.

I'm glad you enjoyed my review! Have a great cruise!

Merry Christmas!

I didn't see a hot tub in the gym area, but I did see dry and wet saunas. I know what you're talking about though. I've seen it on other Carnival ships.

I will be on Conquest end of May so I will look again in the gym area and post on this thread. I would like a hot tub in the gym as well:D!
