Astro Flyer Posted February 4, 2016 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2016 I just read that a landslide has restricted the narrow dirt & gravel road at about MM 37 which coming from Hana is past Kīpahulu where O'heo Gulch (AKA 7 Sacred Pools) & Lindbergh's grave are located. "The county has initiated emergency work in the area which will require the road to be tested for stability before repair work begins. The testing will require the road to be closed completely, from Feb. 16 to Feb. 19, between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. After that the road will still need to be closed partially for testing from Feb. 22 to Feb. 26, also from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m". http://mauinow.com/2016/02/03/kipahulu-landslide-wipes-out-road-shoulder-emergency-closures-planned/ So if anyone was considering driving around the southern end of Maui through Kaupo there are scheduled delays & closures. Astro Flyer Posted February 6, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted February 6, 2016 (edited) i wont be there until early April, but it doesn't sound like this will be quickly remedied. i wonder where cruisers should check about hana road closures before leaving? I searched online & found a couple of Maui County websites that may help you. http://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/maui/ http://www.co.maui.hi.us/AlertCenter/ http://www.co.maui.hi.us/Directory/Home/DepartmentListing?DID=191 http://mauinow.com/tag/maui-road-closure/ As I posted this is past where most people travel & would only affect anyone wanting to drive around the southern end of Maui. Based on the photo it's a road cut into the shoreline with the ocean on one side & a cutout cliff going up on the other side. To me it looks like the same area that was affected by a stronger quake several years ago. That road goes to Upcountry (Ulupalakua & Kula) but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone visiting Maui for the day. ;) Edited February 6, 2016 by Astro Flyer
sjmbruce Posted February 6, 2016 #4 Share Posted February 6, 2016 thanks for the websites and the information. it sounds like driving to the Southern portion of Haleakala National Park (where the visitor's center and trailheads are) is not affected? Yes...I confirmed it by looking at a map with mileage markers...no issues getting to the NP in Kipahulu when driving from Kahului. :) You might want to keep the sites if touring Maui to learn about any emergency closures. The affects of the strong El Niño season this year is generally a big reduction of rainfall in Hawaii. I recently read rainfall statistics for January and most places in Hawaii had a small fraction of their normal rainfall. The reduced rainfall can result in less dramatic waterfalls and in some cases not "falling" at all. Edited February 6, 2016 by Astro Flyer

Have a great experience in Hawaii & return here again for a land tour! :D There's so much to experience & I feel that it's a mistake to try to do too many things during a port day without taking the time to enjoy the experience. ;)
