Taxi to Taormina

You are talking about 40-45 min each way and we suspect (very educated guess) that a taxi in Messina will want about 100€ for the trip. As to how you get back, you could either have the taxi wait a few hours (a lot more money) or hope there are some taxis just waiting around near one of the two main city entrances (likely but not guaranteed).

There are certainly other options (sharing, rental car, train, regional bus, excursion) but we are only answering your specific question.

Can anyone tell me what the taxi situation is at the port in Messina? Is it easy to catch a taxi to Taormina? And then is it easy to find a taxi back to the ship? What does a taxi cost from Messina to Taormina?

While there are taxi's available, it would be cheaper to arrange for a private tour that can take you as many places as you like at what will likely could be a more reasonable cost. You can also check Viator.com for shared tours or shared transportation that could get you there and back.

taxi Eur 100 each way or roundtrip? please reply, thx

It is all negotiable... But when you say "roundtrip" consider that if you hire one taxi for roundtrip...the driver is going to charge you for waiting time. So having a taxi for 3 or 4 hours will generally cost several hundred Euros. One way will cost you about 100€ as you are talking about a 50 Kilometer ride. Taking the train, a regional bus, or even renting a car will all be substantially less costly.

With taxis, in theory, you could a taxi one-way to Taormina and pay the 100€. Then, when you are ready to return you could find a taxi at Taormina (there are usually some taxis near the two main entrances) and probably pay another 100€ to get back to Messina. So if you could negotiate a deal with a driver (in Messina) to take you round trip for about 200€ that would be reasonable. But do not count on getting that kind of deal. We sometimes rent a car and then can drive ourselves to Taormina, up to Castelmola, and wherever else we please.....without worrying about taxis, waiting for trains, buses, etc. And a one day rental of a small car is usually far less then 100€.
