Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Announces Two New Luxury Expedition Vessels to Launch in 2019

Suddenly there will be a glut of luxury ships cruising to Antarctica. Seabourn Quest. Silver Cloud. Scenic Eclipse and now two HL ships.

Suddenly there will be a glut of luxury ships cruising to Antarctica. Seabourn Quest. Silver Cloud. Scenic Eclipse and now two HL ships.

Hapag-Lloyd Expedition Cruises already operate a 5* ship, the Hanseatic, with their other, the Bremen, being 4+*.

The proposed new ships will be much bigger with one being aimed at English speaking markets.

It would appear that one of the existing expedition ships will be retained.

Looks like it if they are looking for 5 total. I wonder whether they'll keep the Hanseatic or the Bremen. Maybe the Bremen to offer slightly less expensive expeditions in comparison to the two new ones?

If the emphasis is to be on 5* cruising then one suspects that they will retain the Hanseatic.

Compared to the existing ships, the Passenger/Space Ratio of the new ships will be greatly increased.

Bremen:

Tons: 6752

Passengers: 164

Hanseatic:

Tons: 8378

Passengers: 184

New Ships:

Tons: 16000

Passengers: 240.

According to this interview (sorry, in German), they'll keep the Bremen but also might try to re-charter the Hanseatic.

i heard she is getting too old to keep her on the same level and more refurbishments are simply too expensive in view of her age.

The Bremen is in fact older than the Hanseatic, and yet Hapag-Lloyd intend to retain it.

Probably because they actually own the Bremen.
