Scottish Road Trips

Recommended Posts

We will be in the port of South Queensferry on 7/1/17 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM and hubby would like to visit The Royal & Ancient Golf Club. We are planning on taking a guided walk of the Old Course (https://www.standrews.com/relax/guided-walks-of-the-old-course). We also plan to make the best use of our car rental by touring the area. I have found the following suggested itineraries:

Fife Coastal Route: https://roadtrips.visitscotland.com/routes/fife-coastal-route

Forth Valley Tourist Route: https://roadtrips.visitscotland.com/routes/forth-valley-tourist-route

Falkland & St Andrews Tour: http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/ustours/falkland-standrews/

I was wondering if anyone had any additional recommendations for us to consider...

It's lovely that you have such a nice long day in port but even allowing for that, I wouldn't do the Forth Valley Tourist Route as it's in the opposite direction from St Andrews. In a way you'll be limited because the places of interest will all be closed by 6:00 p.m.

I'd suggest that you use the Fife Coastal Route from Queensferry to get to St Andrews. You will pass through some pretty fishing villages after Leven and I'd recommend stopping at the very quaint Lower largo where Alexander Selkirk (Robinson Crusoe) was born. You should also make sure that you at least drive round the fishing ports in St Monans, Pittenweem and Anstruther and perhaps allow a bit longer to explore Crail. As well as the R&A in St Andrews, it is an historic town with a beautiful town centre, the old university particularly St Salvator's College, The Castle and Cathedral. There are independent shops and a couple of recommended fish and chip shops (Cromar's and Tailend) as well as other excellent eateries.

After St Andrews, head via Cupar to Falkland and visit Falkland Palace and see where Outlanders was filmed. Nice spot for tea. The main road back to Queensferry is the A92 becoming the M90 and if time allows I'd stop off in Dunfermline and visit Andew Carnegie's Birthplace Museum and Dunfermline Abbey where King Robert The Bruce is buried.

From there it's a short drive back to Queensferry and I'd end the day having dinner in Oroco Pier reflecting on your day and enjoying fantastic views over the river, your ship and the three bridges. Just one person's opinion :)

Just be aware that if you email any tour operator, car rental etc then use the date format of DD/MM/YY, or better still spell out the month, i.e. 1st July. If you ask about 7/1/17 then it will be taken as 7th January.
