Dear Leesal,
The Dolphin Tour is a worthy and unforgettable experience operated on the island of Freeport.
A mid morning ferry on this guided tour takes you along the cays to Sanctuary Bay where the dolphins are trained - are not held in captivity - go out to sea and always return to the Bay.
You have this opportunity for a close encounter with the dolphins where groups of people are assembled in a line in shallow water in one of the enclosures of Sanctuary Bay and socialize with the dolphins.
The dolphins are treated conservatively and one is instructed to refrain from any hand movements as these are the methods used by the trainers in their communication with the dolphins.
You are treated to a wonderful display and closely witness the incredible speed at which the dolphins travel underwater and the incredible height they reach in unison.
The whole tour is recorded and you have the option to purchase this taped tour on video which is a wonderful momento of your close encounter.
On Grand Bahama Island you should find a website on the net.
Enjoy the wonderful hospitality that you will receive in Freeport - it truly is a beautiful island.
Regards,
Boardtalker.

I took the Peterson Cay Kayak tour and it was really cool! I know that the tour can only take a few people, so sign up quickly if you still can. You get to kayak to a really small island, snorkel in the most beautiful water, and have lunch on the island before coming back and hanging at the beach for a while. We saw a stingray, a small octopus, and a starfish. The guide is with you the whole time to point things out, it was awesome!

Dear Leesal,
The Lucaya Beach was not accessible to us while we were there, due to the enormous construction work for the new Hotel in '98, but visible was the enormous stretch of beach and turquoise blue sea in the distance.
There is a lot to see in Lucaya, and the beach at Lucaya would probably be your best bet as the closest beach to the central shopping district - and the port.
Cruise passengers are taken regularly to Lucaya and the marina.
We stayed at Taino Beach which required a ferry boat ride along the Cays to the main island of Lucaya. + - 20mins.
You will be enchanted by any and all the unbelievably beautiful beaches in Freeport - as we were!
I am sure that other members readily update you,and offer you much more information that I can.
Regards,
Boardtalker.

The Westin/Sheraton resort is now the Radisson resort. I'm not sure about day passes as it just changed hands June 1st. You can walk either between the 2 resort areas (past casino on right) or go to the right of what was the Sheraton and walk down the public road. No one will bother you on the beach BUT the pools/bathrooms/etc are resort property and they may restrict you. The shopping area has food/bars/bathrooms/shops/straw market/etc.
Hope this helps...

Boardtalker.

Just have to point out that Taino Beach is not on a different island - just along the coast of Grand Bahama. The resort operates a ferry to get people to Lucaya, but it is just as feasible to go by car, or even walk! Glad to hear your favourable comments - I lived there for 4 years in the early 70's! Map here and there is a good forum too for questions, answers and information -

I really would not suggest walking now... may have been nice in the 70's but not today...

I really wasn’t suggesting anyone walk - just merely pointing out the geography of the island - that Lucaya is not a separate island!

AH... ok, Quite true... in fact you are on the same side of GBI as the port. Most resorts/hotels are on the same side.

Dear Bobsfamily,
Paradise can't be lost!..and I take heart that everything that may need to be restored will in time - with pride reflect it's former glory.

We struggled with what to do as well. We will see a lot of beach in Grand Turk and Half Moon Cay, so I really wanted to do something different in Freeport. We have 6 of us, 7-66 years of age. We ended up booking the glass bottom boat tour offered by the ship. We'll see how it goes.

I would honestly say DO SOMETHING ELSE!!! The boat is a TUB and if it is windy/choppy you best not have eaten anything... it may come back up.

With 6 rent a taxi, have them take you to Our Lucaya, do some shopping, go to the beach (ask anyone they will point the way), eat at the shack on the beach (fried lobster is the ticket), get that trinket and grab a taxi in front of the casino (free drinks for players) back to the ship. Being that you have had plenty of beach at HMC get back onboard early and have a nice relaxing day with an empty ship.

You could try Golden Rock beach You could probably find a tour bus going there. That is a beautiful beach with tons on star fish ect. Pirates of the Caribbean was partially filmed on it. across the road is a small cave tour. Also garden of the groves is supposed to be quit nice never made it there, but heard wonderful things about it. Try GBI news forum they have tons of locals on that board who would love to give you a few more suggestions.

Good place... But there really is no "tour" bus going that way. You can contract with a taxi to take you and pick you back up. No real shopping/eateries/bars/etc. but real pretty.

We did not have the best of luck with the Glass Bottom Boat. There were like 15 people on my tour and almost all of them were sick from the bobbing. Luckily, I was not one of them.

I'd look into a resort daypass if possible. I didn't find Freeport to have much to do.

Make sure to take something like Bonine or 24 Hour Less Drowsy Dramamine 1 hour before boarding - recommended for any boat tour, but especially the glass bottom boat. If you do that, you probably won't have an issue and will have a nice time. I use these medications (I am prone to seasickness) and they work well for me without the drowsiness (just take 1 tablet, even though it says 1-2 - I find 2 makes me drowsy, but 1 is effective and doesn't make me drowsy).
