Hi all. We are going on a cruise in Hawaii the end of October.I am new to this. I have friends who have cruised and some say that you should not bring any of your "real" jewelry, such as diamond wedding bands, engagement rings, etc. They buy fake jewelry to wear on cruise.Others say, they bring their rings, as you can put in safe.I would like to get some of your opinions on what you do.
Also, what do you do when you go to pool and beach? Do you wear your rings?thanks for your help. |

I bring my wedding rings, but mine is a solitaire and not very flashy, unlike some of my friends.
I don't wear them to the beach, pool or on active excursions (cave tubing in Belize), and I didn't wear them in Ocho Rios. I leave all my jewelry in the safe, even the fake stuff, just so I know that it's all in one spot, along with our cell phones, extra cash, passports and our wallets when we are on board.

Wear your jewelry or carry it with you to the ship. Then put anything you aren't wearing in the safe. I have never heard of anyone's safe being robbed on a ship. If you are staying in a hotel, that is a different story.

I have some lovely valuable jewelry. The only time I get to use it is on cruises. I do worry a bit about the stuff with "sentimental value" so it only goes on some cruises, not all of them. I wear my jewelry onboard at dinner mainly, not at the ports. At port, I wear NO jewelry, and carry only one credit card and limited cash.

I have some lovely inherited pieces of jewelry that go back to the 1920s. If I didn't bring them with me, I might as well take them to the pawn shop. I wear them onboard the ship in the evening and keep them secure in the cabin otherwise.
I usually only wear my wedding band and a sporty watch on shore.

What good is having jewelry if you don't enjoy it?
I'd not wear my real pieces to the beach, but I wouldn't even wear fake jewelry to the beach, either. When we're off the ship on excursions I only have on a watch and earrings, I'm not crazy for wearing a lot of jewelry during the day. Always carry your stuff in a small jewelry bag in your purse while traveling. Also, no matter what, always take off your jewelry at night, no matter how tired or how much you have had to drink and put it back into the jewelry case and into the safe. |

I bring my good jewelry with me to wear onboard. Once we get to our cabin, the jewelry case goes in the safe until I need a piece or two. I never take my wedding ring off (except to clean it); it's handcrafted with an emerald and a diamond, and I've never felt that I shouldn't wear it no matter where we've been.
Enjoy your jewelry for dress-up times on the ship; I think it adds to the entire ambiance of cruising. Smooth Sailing! ![]() ![]()

Jewelry is for WEARING--not hiding it in a safe! Bring it! Wear it! Enjoy it!

I always wear my wedding and engagement rings--I'm not even sure I could get them off!
I take my jewelry with me on a cruise, keep it in the safe, and wear it aboard ship. The problem, IMHO, with wearing fancy fakes in port is that the bad guys don't carry jewelry loups and take the time to figure out if your jewelry is real or fake. In port, I usually wear simple, inexpensive silver earrings and a bracelet--I figure that thieves won't bother me for something that is obviously of such little value. |

I always wear my jewelry on vacation. Never take off my diamond engagement/wedding rings. I have a few really nice pieces and don't switch around -take off for beach/pool days and lock in safe and wear at all other times. Everything is insured so if something happened I would not be too worried. I really can't see the purpose of buying or wearing fakes because for me the fun is enjoying my jewelry and that means wearing it.

I wear my real jewelry ( diamond band, solitaire , tennis bracelet, watch) , basically what I wear every day. I do not wear it on excursions, but I don’t wear it to the beaches at home either.
I do not wear fake jewelry. All the jewelry is insured and I would hate to get robbed, or worse, for fakes. M

I have a wide band and a solitare also - i wear the diamond on board - only wear the band on shore. Like others have said- don't want to draw attention to something that's worth minimum. Bring it and enjoy - just don't stress about it - if that's the case then leave it home. Either way - you'll be beautiful - you're on a ship!

I take my real jewelry and have never had a problem anywhere I've traveled. That includes tennis bracelets, 2 ct engagement ring, wedding band, diamond pendants, diamond stud earrings. I have a couple of costume rings that are large so it's obvious they're not real, but that's about it. Why have it if you're too afraid to wear it? If we're doing a beach excursion I only wear my rings and sometimes earrings. Other excursions, I wear everything. Where has anyone been that they've run into "bad" guys? We take ships excursions but also just walk around some ports and don't do anything stupid like going off the beaten path. You will see plenty of real jewelry onboard and in port. Don't worry about it and use common sense while in port.

I take my real jewellery on our vacations. That is why I bought it. Although I keep the selection down and don't wear the valuable stuff off ship (Take Avon things and silver bracelet, chain).
A word about ship safes: On MSC last year a lot of people had trouble with the safes not opening. Security had a full time person running around opening and resetting safes. People talked about it at dinner each night. After our 4th..yes 4th reopening..he gave us the code to reopen it for our convenience. Needless to say, all our valuables were then put in a carryon (locked) and then relocked in a larger bag. We didn't use the safe again, realizing how easy theft could happen. All you need is one bad egg to get this job or code and anything of sentimental value could be compromised. I believe it could happen on any cruisline..this one was just more transparent. So consider taking what is insured, not sentimental and photograph what you take so it can be replaced. By all means wear your jewellery and I do intend to continue with mine and will use onboard safe as well.

I do not own any expensive jewelry. All my money goes into cruises *lol*. I have heard, more than once, of people having their jewelry stolen. Not from cabin safes, mind you, but on their vacations. Think very carefully about taking something with you that you couldn't bear to lose. I'm not really referring to wedding rings since they pretty much stay on.

I take my good stuff too. Like so many of you, I feel it should be worn and enjoyed. I take the pieces that will work for my outfits, but I do leave the sentimental pieces home, i.e. my Mom's wedding ring, etc.
