Review- Liberty of the Seas 8/1/09 Eastern

We're back from the Liberty, and I hate to say it... but I think we have a new favorite ship. We had the best vacation! Here’s a little review and summary of our week. I'm not great at putting these together, but I'll do my best. We have all of the cruise compasses, well actually now they're the "Why Not Today", and over 600 pictures of the ship and ports.

Background- we are 37, two teenage kids (who stayed home), we booked this in April as a kind of "spur of the moment" cruise. We already had two land vacations booked for June and July, but we couldn't pass up the residency rate on this. We liked Freedom when we were on her, but we loved the Voyager class ships. Before Liberty, Mariner was our favorite ship.

Food- It’s no breaking news that the food is going downhill. The only “bad” meal we had was the first day in the WJ for lunch. Everything was either dry or greasy and cold. Things got better after that first day; every other meal in the WJ was at least average. The MDR food was good, nothing spectacular, but not terrible. We didn’t do the formal nights this trip, so I can’t comment on the fillet of beef or lobster, but from what we had, there was an obvious drop in the quality and quantity of meats. Sorrento’s was good, as were snacks in the Café Promenade. Room service... well, it never has had much to live up to.

Crowds- This was a sold out cruise, but we felt like there was hardly anybody onboard! That was the one big thing we didn’t like about Freedom a couple years ago, the crowds were terrible. We could never find pool chairs, seats in the WJ and shows, but Liberty was a totally different story. The only thing we could come up with was that this was simply a mellower crowd or our sailing had fewer children onboard. There were always plenty of chairs on deck on days at sea, plenty of seats at the shows, the only places we felt crowded were peak times in the WJ and in the gym.

Service- This was one of the highlights of this cruise. The service was excellent and the staff was so friendly, with the exception of the bartenders at the Sky Bar and staff at Sorrento’s. Not sure what their deal was. But we had the best stateroom attendant and dining room waiter that we have ever had. We made sure to give them an extra tip and mention them on our surveys.

Entertainment- I hate to have to mention the low point of our cruise, but it was the production shows. Honestly, they were bad. The actual performances were good, but the themes and music for the shows were either strange or depressing. We expected a lot more out of the production shows, but I will say the ice show was hands down the absolute best we have ever seen on Royal Caribbean.

Cabin- We had an inside cabin on deck 6 by the aft elevators. We don't like inside cabins, but the residency rate was only open for insides, so we took what we could get and were glad just to be onboard! We couldn't justify the extra $900 p/p for a "bonus" trip this year. Had it been our only vacation of the year, we would have gone for a balcony or JS, but as little as we were in the room, it wasn't a bad deal.

Day 1 (Miami)-
We stayed the night before at the Ritz Carlton in Atlanta, where I left my Yukon and took a shuttle to the Atlanta airport early Saturday morning. Very nice night and start to the cruise. We had an 8:15 flight out of Atlanta on American, which was delayed an hour, getting us to baggage claim in Miami at 11:30, which was later than we would have liked, but still not a disaster. We had booked a limo through Holland Limo and they greeted us at baggage claim. Highly recommend them.

Off to the Liberty! We got to the pier at 12:05 PM-- with the crowd. Try to get there before 11:30 if possible; it seems like right when we pulled up, half the ship got in line to go through security. We really enjoy sailing out of Miami because of the gorgeous view when leaving port, but in the past the actual check in process had been disorganized and confusing. To our surprise, this time, they really had it down. We were checked in, through security, and stepping onboard at 12:45, thanks in part to the Diamond Priority Check-In.

We ate lunch in the WJ, changed into our bathing suits in the room, and headed up to the pool deck to enjoy our first day. It was bright and sunny except for a stray shower that lasted about 10 minutes. At 4:05 there was a muster drill and we had no lifejackets !!! I can't tell you how nice this is, especially in the late afternoon in Miami in August.

We did MTD, had the same waiter all week. He was wonderful, we usually went between 7:30-8:00 and never waited and the entire meal lasted about 45 minutes. We really liked how quick the service was and that we had the freedom to go whenever we wanted.

Day 2 (At Sea)-
This was the most gorgeous day we've ever had at sea. No clouds, no haze, perfect blue water and skies. It was beautiful all day.

We went and worked out at the gym at 6:45. We really love the fitness centers on the Freedom class ships. I guess I'm really image conscious- work out at least once or twice a day at home, and my wife does a lot of cardio, so a good gym is a must for us. They many of the machines we have at our fitness center at home. Our only complaint was that it isn't open longer hours. It was already packed at 6:45 in the morning and I had to wait in line for free weights and a treadmill. I could usually find an empty machine, but it just always felt crowded in the mornings.

If I didn't already mention it, we're big beach and pool people, we just love to the outside and in the sun. Went out at 9:15 after breakfast and got our chairs and towels. They had the belly flop contests today and a band playing at the pool most of the day. A normal sea day for the most part, we just couldn't get over the perfect weather. We went back inside at around 5PM, showered, went to the Diamond lounge, and went to dinner at the Windjammer (this was formal night and we decided not to bring the hanging bag this cruise), the show, and the Crypt.

Day 3 (At Sea)-
Today started off a little cloudy with showers. Once again, we got up early, hit the fitness center, and ate a light breakfast in the WJ. We were out by the pool by 10 AM and the skies started to clear up. Ended up being a nice day. Basically a repeat of yesterday. We stayed out at the pool until late afternoon and went to dinner, the Viking Crown, and drank at the Crypt and Boleros.

Day 4 (St. Maarten)-
St Maarten! We love it here, have been on several land vacations and a couple cruises. We took a cab to Orient Bay as soon as we worked out and grabbed a bite to eat. This was another perfect day as far as weather. We rented chairs and an umbrella for $20 and it included two free drinks. Not a bad deal. We stayed until 3:00 and headed back to the ship. We drank a little too much at Orient, so we took a couple hour nap in the Solarium before we went to dinner. No drinking tonight, we just went to dinner and the late show and went to bed.

Day 5 (San Juan)-
I don't really know why, but I just don't like San Juan. It may have to do with the fact that we've never been more than a few hours and it's always overcast when we're there. But anyways, we didn't do much here. We went to Castillo San Cristobal, because we wanted to see another fort after touring El Morro a couple years back. I'm not much of an educational guy when I'm on vacation, so we just stayed a few minutes and went to Senor Frogs by the pier for a few shots before getting back onboard.

Like I said, it was overcast today, so we got chairs in the Solarium once we were back onboard. We departed San Juan at 2PM and within 10 minutes, the sun popped out and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. So we stayed out by the pool for most of the afternoon.

The solarium is a really cool place to hang out during the day. We never tried it much until this trip. It was really relaxed and the chairs were nice, although it was harder to find good chairs in the shade.

Tonight we did dinner in the WJ (if I remember correctly tonight was formal night again), went to she show and went to Boleros for drinks.

Day 6 (Labadee)-
Our last port of call, we were starting to get depressed ! We hadn't been here since 2006. It's still nice, but it's just not the same Labadee that it used to be. It's getting way too commercialized. The construction really was nasty looking. It didn't bother us because we went to a beach far away from it, but I heard some first time cruisers talking about what a mess the place was. Literally the first thing you see when you get on the island is construction trailers and cranes.

But, aside from the construction, we had another beautiful weather day and our part of the island was still pretty and un-altered. We were on the first tender ashore, so we got to enjoy it before the crowds rushed in around 10 AM. We got back onboard at about 12:30 so that we could have the ship to ourselves. It was vacant, so nice! We ate lunch at Sorrento’s and had the pool deck to ourselves for a few hours.

Just like most other nights, we went to the Diamond Lounge, dinner in the MDR, the show, and stayed out late at various bars and the casino.

Day 7 (At Sea)-
Where did the week go!? It seems like yesterday we were boarding in Miami. It was hot, hot, hot (109 degrees) and no breeze on the last day. This was the perfect day for a couple buckets of beer and frozen drinks up on deck. We had to go inside and pack at about 5 PM before dinner. The farewell show was sad, but as always, made us eager to book our next cruise. We stayed out most of the night, it always feels like the earlier you go to bed on the last night, the sooner the cruise is over! But before we knew it, the alarm clock was going off and we were back in Miami.

Day 8 (Miami)-
We were the second color to be called, so we went to the Platinum, Diamond, and D+ departure lounge in the Sphinx lounge. They had a continental breakfast with coffee and OJ. We were told we would be called between 7:00-7:30. They called our tags at 7:35 and we walked right off- sadly our vacation had come to an end.


All in all, we had a fantastic trip onboard the Liberty of the Seas. We’re planning of sailing on the Navigator or Grandeur for a 5 night in March and then Freedom in June. We love the Liberty, but with equal prices and being close to Port Canaveral, Freedom is a no-brainer.

The only thing that bugged me was the HUGE LINES getting back onboard. Those were the only times that the cruise felt sold out to me.

St maarten was awesome.

San Juan was fine, I hadn't been there before, and I went to a Travel Channel must. "La Bombonera". Which was awesome.

I think it was just a mix of the staff, the itenerary, the MDR experience, and the fact that it just didn't feel crowded. Don't get me wrong, I loved Freedom, too and we just booked it for next summer, but I would just give Liberty the slight edge.

That's true, the lines getting back onboard in San Juan were pretty bad.

I know I can't believe we have to wait until next year to do it all over again ! We had a great time, I'm so glad we decided to do this cruise.

We never made it down there to see that buffet in the Promenade, guess where we were-- pool volleyball !

Two lbs is nothing, I gained 4, but we both lost five before we left so all is good!

We were on Liberty this past May. You could have written our review as well. We agree 100% with you on everything, specifically the food and entertainment. Usually we enjoy the shows greatly. The singers and dancers were VERY TALENTED!!! You could really tell they were good at what they did. Unfortunately the shows were absolutely HORRIBLE. Too bad the talent was wasted on those shows.

We also felt like the ship did not have as many passenger as they say she did. It NEVER felt crowded except for the chair hogs, don't even get me started on this one.

Thanks for the review...can't wait to sail on Freedom next year. We too are worried about crowds, but we're sailing right after the school year starts, so we may get lucky and not have the huge crowds.

Just got back from the same cruise. I'll post my full review later. Gotta go for a long run this morning and try and work off a few of these new found pounds

My youngest goes to a highly rated high school for the performing arts were we often find ourselves amazed at the quality and professionalism of the productions that include instrumentals, musical theatre, dance....so we have high expectations.

The comedians were good as was the ice show and the quick change artists. The other productions were just plain bad. The RCI performers were talented but the material, choreography, etc. was just plain cheesy and poorly directed. Better than a normal high school production is the best I can say. I forced my family to attend each night but if I had it to do over again I would take a pass after sampling the first show. If it weren't for theater etiquite we would have walked out of each show after the first 10 minutes. Actually that would be my best advice - don't opt for the front row - choose a seat/section where you can leave without offending the performers and theater goers.

I should mention that children under the age of 12 would probably enjoy these shows.

Freedom (Oct.2006) and am excited to see the difference and some

someone, anyone to post the daily schedule from the LOS to no
success, so I'm very pleased that you are willing to answer our plea.

thanx for posting the new compasses, the only problem is that when
i tried to print them nothing will show, maybe you could scan them
at work and email them to me and i would be able to print them that
way so i can sit down and go over them. i know one person emailed the
western itineraries by PDF and they were able to print, my email

Thanks so much for posting these. However, I cannot view it full size unless we are linked as friends on webshots. I can see the single pages ok, but the double pages are way too far away. Is it possible for you to reshoot those as singles?
