Exclamation Avis in Skagway -- on the spot information

Just returned from a great Alaska cruise tour. While I was in Skagway I made a point of introducing myself to Mary, the Skagway Station Manager for Avis, and getting THE FACTS directly.

First of all -- they are positively checking qualifications for discount codes! DO NOT try to get away with a discount code you are not entitled to. Particularly, the code that has been floating around this board is a Travel Agent code and they WILL demand your IATAN card.

Office hours are 8 AM to 6 PM M-F and 9 AM - 5 PM Sat and Sun. There is a drop box for keys after hours. Of course, there is only one gas station in Skagway to fill up at.

DYEA -- there is a LARGE sign on the wall that says in big red letters, "The insurance DOES NOT cover operation on unpaved roads." We were told you can go to Dyea (how can they stop you?) but at YOUR RISK. The Dyea spur is paved as far as the viewpoint so that is perfectly OK.

VAN and SUVs -- they have one van and four or five SUVS (occasionally they are taken or received from other stations) which are available but not on the web site. The local phone number is 907 983-2247 but it is seasonal.

This is direct from the on the spot office. I hope it helps.

Nice information, I was in Skagway last week and used Sourdough rentals. I usually always use Avis but wanted to be able to go to the ghost town. You do not want to use Avis if you are going down dirt roads, it will get expensive. I rented a van for $114 from Sourdough, all fees included and they allowed and encouraged you to use the vehicle where you want. Now keep in mind you will get an older vehicle but for the day is was well worth it. We saw bear and cubs going down to the dead town and also alot of salmon in the water which kept you on your toes for more bear.
