Default rocky beaches for best snorkeling. which ones ??

i keep reading that to get the best snorkeling experience you need a rocky beach. which beaches would these be?? i want to snorkel for the first time in cozumel and want to make sure it is a good worthwhile place to do it. if anyone can give the names of such beaches i would really appriciate it. thanks so much.

Hey Dusty,

It's me a gain. We always look for good snorkeling when in port. Dzul Ha, Chankanaab and Playa Uvas would be my picks. Chank is really nice. We have done it twice. Saw our first moray eel at Dzul Ha. I personally have not been to Playa Uvas but it should be good because it is in the same general area as the others and I have seen good reviews about it.

To see the good stuff you need to take a boat trip out to one of the reefs. Playa Palancar has a good one and it is a great place to spend a day. It is less crowded and pretty laidback.

hi clackey, i was thinking about chankanaab but wondered if there were others. i will do some research for all the places you mentioned. it is tough to decide what place to go too for the first time and get the most out of it. but that is alot of the fun of planning a cruise and tours isnt it .

The planning is most of the fun, but it is real easy to expect too much. I had everything planned and researched for one trip and Katrina changed it all. Then on our first trip to Belize I had great expectations for the cavetubing. The weather kicked up and we couldn't tender. We landed up in Calica instead. We still had a good time. We went cavetubing the next year.

All of the sites that I mentioned can be had via taxi. Dzul Ha is at the Money Bar, which didn't exist when we were there last. There was only a small sandy area with tables and palapas, and across the street was Palmar Beach Estates. I guess things have changed a little.

We are going to Coz again in Dec. and we will probably land up at Nachi Cocum or Playa Uvas. We like to try new places each trip. Chank is the only place that we have visited twice in 8 trips. I wanted to go to Nachi last year but Ginger D pulled rank on me.

i am planning on just getting off the ship and going somewhere. carnival prices are really high and i dont want to book online in case we cant stop there or for someother reason i cant make the tour. it is so hard to pick one place. nachi sounds really good and so does playa uvas. boy, it sounds like you have had experience with the affects of the hurricanes. i am praying one dont come up at the time of my cruise. only 21 days too go. wow, i cant wait.

Default Happy Sailing.

Dusty,

We were on coz about 3 months after Wilma. The concrete piers were demolished. I mean totally. There wasn't anything left but steel rebar and gumbled concrete. Unbelievable! We went back 6 months later and the people were working their butts off getting things back to normal. In contast, New Orleans is still a mess. I think that our government could take a lesson from our Latino neighbors.

Be sure to write a review. We would like to hear about your trip.

wow, the devistation was pretty intense huh??. i pray none of us have to deal with any hurricanes this season but i know that is asking for too much. i just have to get past 3 more weeks to get my cruise in.. i sure hope the weather is good to me. . i will do a reveiw, but i am not very good at them. i will try though. i am so excited.

Dusty,
We usually do the Fury catamaran, but plan on finding a decent beach to snorkel from this time, so very interested in what you find. I'm LeClaire, east of Bettendorf. What a small world!!!

Have fun and don't forget to post, or you could go to Carnival Valor's Jan. 24 thread and write me there what you ended up doing. Thanks in advance.

la claire, omg, it is a small world. i love to go there and shop and eat. we go threw there on our way to galina. it is good to know there are others that live so close that are cruise lovers like i am. i will let you know what i do. i am really at a loss. i cant see a thing without my glasses and i bought a underwater camera so i dont know how well i will be able to see anything. i might have to do the submarine or the helmet dive to really enjoy the veiw down under the water. i will decide soon. it is getting close too the time to leave and i want my '' ducks in a row ''' . have you ever taken the Twilight cruise to Debuque from your home town. i thought about doing that once also.

I'm wondering...when you get off of the International Pier, isn't there a hotel to your left where you can just go and use their beach? I think I've seen people snorkeling there. We want to snorkel and MAYBE go into town. We've done Chankanaab 3 times and would like to snorkel for free

goodcelt,
La Palipita is within walking distance (15 minutes) of the International Pier. I haven't been there, but have read about it and it sounds like a good place for snorkeling, meeting the locals and have some drinks.

Dusty,
I haven't done the Twilight, but know some who have, and they have enjoyed it. I see the Mississippi everyday and although I respect its beauty, I don't want to cruise it.

I will be there next week and this will be my 5th time in cozumel, but my first time actually snorkeling!! Chankanaab is suppose to be very good and playa uvas is just north of it...it's soo close that it part of chankanaab marine park. Im going to playa uvas and admission is only 7 pp.. this includes lounge chairs, showers, hammocks, use of there pool, and maybe some other things,,and of course the reef!!. they also have packages for guided snorkeling tours, open bar, lunch, massages. all of which are pretty reasonable. google it and you can see what it's about.

taxi to them will run about 10 for up to 4 people

good luck deciding!

stunned, i see the mississippi all the time too. i thought the twighlite cruise would be a '' little fix '' for a real cruise. . but i found out it is almost $400 . not worth it too me since i am used too being on the
'''' big-boys '''' and going to interesting ports. thanks for letting us know about the la palipita beach. it sounds good.

Thank you. We're on a very low budget...I know, sounds weird since we're taking a cruise. But we're celebrating our 25th anniversary and DH was without a job for 9 months. We got a really good deal and I don't need all the frills, taxi fares, etc. I'm just truly grateful to be taking a cruise. I almost feel guilty. But on the other hand, I have always had the philosophy of having a good time whenever possible because the shizz is just around the corner. That's life. But if I can leave the ship, walk to a place to snorkel, and buy some vanilla on the way back to the ship, I'm happy.
