Hi.
Has anybody recently been on the Infinity and experienced rough waters? I just read karasdad review and they posted the following "The first night (at midnight) in open water the boat began rolling and pitching severly and continued for about 12 hours.I was told by three different crew members that this ship has a shallow draft to permit access to more docks, it's bottom is rounded and it is top heavy, all of which contribute to greater propensity to roll and pitch. On top of that, one crew told me that he heard that the stabilizers were not fully operational and it made it worse during the rough seas" Has anybody that was recently on the Infinity experience rough waters like this? I thought that the Inner passage was suppose to be smoother sailing. Anybody that was recently back, please let us know your experiences. I am going on the Infinity in two weeks and worried it is going to be rough waters. Thanks |

Does it sail from Seattle or Vancouver? If it is the Seattle route, then there often is potential for the ship to be rather rocker near the beginning and end of the cruise. The Vancouver inside passage route tends to be smoother on average.

I read another cruise review that last week there was gale force winds and the ship (not a celebrity) had to miss a couple of ports in the inside passage. Here is a great website that shows it really bad right now as well. I sure hope the winds end soon or at least before Sept 4th!!

I was on Infinity 7/24-7/31, and it was incredibly smooth. The inside passage was like a pond.

We just got off the Infinity 3 days ago and we ran into the same storm the previous poster mentioned on the way to Hubbard Glacier. The ship was rocking and rolling quite a bit after we left the protected waters of Inside Passage as all ships, regardless of origination, has to be out in the open waters to approach Hubbard Glacier.
Once we got into Disenchentment Bay by the Glacier, it was smooth sailing, but the way there and to less extent, on way back, many people had issues with motion sickness. You can’t walk a straight line at the buffet and that night’s dinner, there was a notice absence of people from the MDR. The next day at the elevator/buffet line/public area and even the cruise director, the topic of conversation was how rocky the ship was the previous day. The next day when we were at Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, it was a nice day (after the storm blew out) and the shuttle driver said the previous day (the day we were at Hubbard Bay), the rain in Juneau was coming sideways. Others on the bus said they missed their Haines port of call due to bad weather. So if you are lucky, you won’t run into any storms and the waters will be smoother for you. But if you are worried about motion sickness, be prepared with meds (free at guest relations) or Sea band ($8 at Wal-Mart) or ginger pills (at GNC or other health vitamin stores) or the various other remedies everyone uses to fight motion sickness. Typically that is true in sailings out of Seattle is rockier than the Vancouver sailings, but this year Infinity is sailing on the east side of the Vancouver Island on the northbound passage, so it’s as if it’s sailing out of Vancouver when it runs alongside her sister ship Millennium when she does her every other week north bound run from Vancouver. Only the on southbound passage does the Infinity get out on the west side of the Vancouver Island in open water on way to Victoria. For our cruise, the worst sea movement was the day we left Ketchikan and in open water to Hubbard Glacier. After that, the movement on southbound journey on the last sea day was mild in comparison. Guess we got our “sea legs” by then.

We were just on the Infinity Aug. 14th-21st. We did have an approximately 12-hour stretch were it was pretty rough. It was the night cruising up to Hubbard Glacier and a little cruising out (the ship was travelling at a faster speed at this time). I knew we were in trouble when there were vomit bags strategically placed in all of the stairwells and elevators--and Guest Relations was handing out Dramamine. About half of the stateroom doors had their "do not disturb" signs out and I could hear people vomitting in their staterooms while walking down the corridors (gross). Anyway, I'm glad I picked up a book from the ship's library because my daughter was one of those poor souls. My husband was also sick; my son and I were fine. Fortunately things got better and everyone seemed fine by the time we got to Juneau. I would recommend taking Dramamine the night before you get to Hubbard Glacier. I did feel like I was going to roll right out of bed a few times. The crew members I asked said it hadn't been that rough in quite some time.
Have a great time and good luck! |

I also am going on Infinity Sept 4. I'm bringing some Scoplamine patches, but am hoping not to have to use them. Is there something else I should do/use for rough waters?

I was on the Infinity sailing from August 14-21. Let me begin by saying that it was an awesome cruise- you will have a great time!!! There were a few nights (and days) that the ship was very rocky. We had items fall off of shelves and kept hearing the hangers bang together in the closet a couple nights. The crew told us that this was happens everyone once in a while. There was a singing group on the ship that had been there for 5 weeks and they said this was the rockiest the ship has been for them.

Here is a photo of you sailing by on the morning of the 15th. The ride looked good from my vantage point. Even though the fishing was great, I wished that I was up on board.

I would say the main reason for our 8/14 – 8/21 rocky sailing is the storm as it adds the effects of the ship being out in open seas.
For most of the summer, Pacific Northwest/Southeast Alaska was having record heat waves, which meant no storms. So everyone was reporting smooth sailings, but things started to change the week before we sailed and now things are back to more seasonal patterns with rains in August and September. In case anyone is interested, you can use this web site to track the ship’s location and then click on the wave height link at the bottom to see the waves in meters (just need to convert it back to feet) to see what areas in Alaska has bigger waves at various times of the day. http://sailwx.info/shiptrack/shiplocations.phtml
