Default Train from Seward to Anchorage - Take the bus instead

Hi. We just returned from an Alaskan cruise from Vancouver to Seward and booked the train. Hindsight is 20/20 and if we could do it over we would take the bus instead of the train.

The train lasted 5 hours versus a 3 hour bus ride. We had seen the eagles and salmon so stopping to view them was a waste of time for us.

If you are a train enthusiast then you'd like the train but if you are looking forward to being on land, I'd take the bus.

We could, and did, take the train on 2 occasions and much preferred it to the time we took the bus. Sure the train takes longer and costs more, but the scenery from the dome cars and the meals on the train are a great experience. When we are on vacation, time spent getting from one place to another is not important, but the overall experience is.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I saw my kids yesterday so I sure don't need to waste my time seeing them again today. And just think those two hours wasted on the train could have been spent in the Anchorage Walmart or one of those souvenir t-shirt stores.

Seriously, to each their own I guess. I'm booked on the train after my cruise in september so I'll let you know if I share your view of it being a waste of time for me, when I get back.

For sure each to their own! Sometimes Martha and I agreed!

We took train from Anchorage to Seward to get on cruise ship.

We have taken the train and it was wonderful! Able to walk around on train, had breakfast on train, stand on open platform at end of rail car. Having done the train and seeing the views from train, we would next time take bus depending on timeframe and direction. Going from Anchorage to Seward, most likely take train again. From Seward to Anchorage might take bus depending on what we were going to do and how much time we had to allocate for it.
