Hey Mach....you working on the sly here???

Don't I wish!!

Those guys average $317,000 a year but consider that the pilots in Jacksonville are over $345,000 a year and want a 16% bump in pay.

They're already on the bubble as they voted down the new cruise terminal that they promised Carnival they would build and the pay raise that the pilots are demanding may just be the proverbial straw...

As a wise man once said good work if you can get it.

Once upon a time unions were a great thing for the average worker. Now they just support greed and have helped to put some great companies out of business or forced them to outsource overseas.

I worked in the maritime freight business for 8 years, and dealt with the pilots union in question. There really is not that much training, the work is not near as hard as it once was, they are way over paid. That said, while I was in the port of Houston, we lost a Pilot as he was boarding a ship. A wave pushed the pilot boat into him and he was crushed to death. Not as risky as flying a fighter, but not with out some risk.

Most of the world's port pilots work as members of an association and are actually independent contractors. The responsibilities of a pilot are immense as are the potential liabilities. Imagine that you are the pilot landing a liquified natural gas carrier and you have a collision which results in an explosion. Your estate could be liable for the consequential damages which would be in the billions of dollars.

These men (most are that) work a theoretical part-time schedule, but it involves being on call 24 hours per day and often seven days a week. The group I know the most about, the Savannah River Pilots, average about 60 hours per week. That is a hell of a lot of hours for a part-time job.

The level of training that port pilots have is very high. This is not a job that one can go into without special knowledge. It is a position which earns the highest of respect from the customers - the ship owners.

I don't know if they are overpaid or not; I do know that they do a job that I challenge anyone here to do successfully.

Without degrading the thread...(what the hell it's my thread)

Responsibilities, Yes
Risk, Yes
Training, Yes
Respect from the ship Owners ....um as long as they do their jobs I guess..
300 K (I don't care how many hours worked, if it's too high hire someone else) NO WAY...

*IF* I wanted to make this political, I could also explain to your ire is misplaced, but since it deals with issues not at all related to cruising (like executive compensation models, contracts between private parties, and boards of directors), I'll just say I'm grateful for pilots because the ships I've been on have never landed on a sandbar.

It's sad to think that the "american way" when I was a kid was to sue someone. Now the "american way" is to allow unions to run loose on businesses escalating pay to figures businesses can't afford so they look for other options. I too worked in a place that was outsourced awhile back (Thanks Pres. Bush) to mexico and china. I got an education out of it with a TON of crap that had to be done, but we won't go there. I didn't read the article yet but I do know that the old thought of being safe and having a good job because you were in a union is a thing of the past!

I fully agree, or hit any rocks on our last cruise to canada. I'm also pleased they didn't hit any of the whales we saw up there as it would have made a huge mess, both figuratively and litterally.

Default its all relative...

It all relative...

my DW works with unemployed people trying to get into higher education programs for new dregrees or retraining. She has had many people complain that they used to make $10k/month but now are only getting $7/k a month with unemployment benefits and they don't know how the are going to live on that.

Then there a those of us who make 1/4 of that a month and could only dream about the freedom of living on such a large salary. It's all relative, but I can understand how the avg person would feel about someone who make $300k/year asking for a raise especially during these tough times.
