Default Star Princess - missing Victoria

I just looked out my window to see the Star Princess sailing by. There are fairly strong easterly winds and it looks like she is unable to dock despite trying for the past 30 minutes.

That is sad as Victoria is such a great port!

We missed it once and it is disappointing but understandable.

We just got off the Pacific Princess on Thursday and because of weather conditions (high seas and 50 mph winds) the captain had to reduce the speed down to 4 knots on the leg from Juneau to Victoria. As a result, the ship arrived in Victoria at 1am Thursday morning instead of 6pm Wednesday evening. This meant we only had a service call in Victoria. The only people who got off the ship are those who had previously made arrangements to disembark in Victoria.

Weather happens, so you do miss ports once in a while. Unfortunately for us we had also missed Kodiak for the same reason. I guess that's a reason for us to go back some time in the future and try again!

Wow - kind of confirms that the ship excursions, although more expensive, are the way to go. At least your money would be refunded.

Sorry to all who missed Victoria. My home town!

I was on the Star Princess. We had taken the pilot on board, so I am sure the captain had good advice. He made an announcement that he had made two attempts to dock in Victoria, but the wind picked up before each attempt. Although a great cruise, it was not without disappointments. We had to turn around before the island in Tracy Arm, thus just getting a glimpse of Sawyer Glacier. It rained in Ketchican, Juneau, and Scagway. And finally, we didn't get to dock in Victoria, though we saw there was a cruise ship in port and another docked while we were at anchor.

When we were on the Sapphire - someone explained that the first ship in dock is the easiest.

Sorry - mid Sept Alaska sailings are prone for weather issues. I have attempted Tracy Arm twice (once on small boat, once on the Star) and we missed the glacier on small boat (which is rare) and we skipped it all together and went to Endicott Arm instead. Seeing Sawyer Glacier is definitely not something that can be guaranteed - many ships miss it.
