Default New Springhill Suites in Anchorage - Great Hotel!

We stayed at the new Springhill Suites in Anchorage for three nights before our September 11th cruise on the Millennium. What a wonderful choice this turned out to be.
The hotel is located adjacent to the University of Alaska in a beautiful location overlooking a small lake with the mountains in the background. The hotel had a complimentary shuttle to and from the airport and they also took us to the train depot at no additional charge for our early ride to Seward. The reception area was very nicely appointed with chairs, tables and flat screen TV’s and there were several showcases with Alaskan artifacts on display. Each morning a nice breakfast was served here. Outside a gas fire ring was on during the morning and evening; a great pace to sit and relax to enjoy the scenery. All rooms were suites consisting of a sitting area with a small frig and microwave, a desk, and the bedroom with a bath off of it and a separate room for the toilet with an additional sink – great for two people getting ready in the morning. We originally had reservations at the Marriott Courtyard, but changed our plans when this hotel opened in August and I’m so glad we did. While most hotels in Anchorage are either in crowded business areas or downtown, this one is located in an area that seems very remote although in reality is close to everything. I would stay here again in a heartbeat and would highly recommend it to anyone planning a stay in Anchorage.

mek: Can you tell me if the hotel is within a reasonable walking distance of restaurants, the Anchorage Museum, downtown, Cook Outlet, etc. We won't have a car for our half day stay in Anchorage and therefore are trying to find a hotel centrally located and within easy walking distance of restaurants and attractions.

No it isn't. You do need a car here, although places to eat and shop are only 5 minutes away. The first evening we didn't have a car and we ordered Pizza to be delivered then the shuttle took us back to the Airport to pick up our car for the next two days.

Yes, this is a nice place, but it is not handy for people who have no car.

We had friends staying there last week so was able to take a look at the hotel. It is very nice. Has a very modern look and sits on a small lake with a walking path around the lake. It's not close to downtown and there are only a very few places to eat within walking distance. Anchorage is small. Downtown is only about 15 minutes away. It's a great alternative to downtown if you want a slower pace and a lot of peace and quite....

That is the reason I enjoyed it so much. I felt like I was at a lodge in the mountains.

Here's an FYI. Across the street from Springhill Suites is University of Alaska Anchorage housing (UAA) which has a large cafeteria in the commons building. Food is quite good and prices are very reasonable. It's very much like a large food court. Nearby Providence Hospital also has an excellent cafeteria with incredibly low prices for Anchorage. You can get more information on UAA at the school's website at www.uaa.alaska.edu

Granted these are nothing fancy nor would you consider the food gourmet but both are wonderful student and faculty hangouts and they are open during the summer.
