Default Dress Code on river boats

We're contemplating doing a Russian cruise and I've looked at AMA and Vantage. Both say casual (or countryclub casual) but that for the Welcome Board and Farewell dinners, a jacket and tie would be appropriate for men. Do all the men wear jackets and ties? If not, what would be appropriate for men? We don't want to be underdressed but hate to have to pack a jacket and tie for one meal. Any suggestions?

It is very casual and a jacket or tie are not needed. The men wore Docker type pants and a collared shirt for every dinner including the Welcome dinner and farewell dinners. There was a few jackets but a very few.

Good to know. That's our type of cruising.

I'd say 25% of the men had a jacket and tie or just jacket on for the Captain's Wecome/Farewell evening. Most did not. Dockers/kaki pants, sport shirt/golf shirt were pretty much what the men were wearing. A couple of days it was VERY hot, and some men wore shorts, even to dinner.

We will be on AMA this coming December for the Holiday Markets. I will have a Jacket for some dinners however this will be our third river cruise and 95% of the time the men are just in nice casual dress. ie dress shirt or nice golf shirt, sweater etc. Certainly no everyday jeans however the nicer demin slacks have been seen. Some wear a casual jacket however there is no real dress code that we have encountered. Previous lines include Uniworld and Viking.

This was the same as our Avalon experience.
