Unhappy International cruise victims??????

I have just come across this website and the number of posts on there have got me panicking, I just wondered how often these kinds of things (assault, rapes) happened on board cruise lines and if anyone has ever had incidents like these happen and have positive supprt from the cruise staff? Although I understand that these kind of things do happen in todays society both on land and on cruises, I would apreciate hearing from anyone with first hand experiamce with how cruise staff have dealt with inccidents like these.

OMG please don't panic. MILLIONS and I mean MILLIONS of people across the planet cruise every year. Think about the statistics. Nothing's gonna happen to you...

I would venture to guess the percentage of assaults & rapes on any (oh heck, all) cruise lines is far below the percentage in this POS city I live in.

Unhappy Hi, Do not allow those sites to influence you

My husband and I have done 27 cruises on many different cruise lines.
We have never heard of anyone, ever being assaulted on any cruise we have ever taken.
To read about people on those sites you are looking at, is a very small percentage out of millions who cruise.
You also should not believe every single thing you read unless you know it is definitely a fact. Many people are accused of things that are never proven.

I'd agree with that statement.

On the cruise the bigger issue with many folks is what penalty if any ever happens to the criminal who does wrong...some report that nothing ends up done...but I think more and more the crimes especially when a US Citizen is involved ends up reported to the FBI.

You should be safe if you act in a prudent manner...don't get plastered in the bar walk back to the room with a stranger unless you want to do something you may regret the next morning...watch your surroundings just like you would do at the mall at home etc...

Act safe, be safe, and enjoy your cruise.

I am also of the opinion that cruising is probably much safer than traveling to some cities I can think of, but that doesn't relieve anyone of the need to be aware of their own actions and the people around them. I can only recall one incident on a ship that involved a deckhand (Grand Princess) and it was dealt with VERY SWIFTLY. We saw the crewmember the following morning being turned over to Mexican authorities, in chains.

Some people will read anything on the internet and subsequently panic.

They really should have their computers confiscated, all their passwords erased and told never ever to go near the internet again.

I feel the OP may be a candidate for this treatment

I agree with the others, that the percentage of assults is greater in any city than a cruise ship. Not that it does not happen, because we know things can happen any where. And sometimes while cruising it is easy to let your guard down.

Hope you were intending to add a wink or something to the end of that. It's pretty harsh.

I've never seen or heard of any issues on ships. But of course things do happen. As a woman, I wouldn't wander around the ship by myself in the middle of the night. And I wouldn't flash cash around on the ship or on shore. If you put yourself in an iffy situation - on land or on sea - you increase the risks of something bad happening.

I thought about it, Water Baby, then I decided deliberately not to.
It may be harsh, but it is so symptomatic of the way everyone seems to panic at everything they read nowadays I decided that it wasn't worth of a and I actually re-read and decided that I meant what I had typed.
Sorry if that makes me harsh

I would guess you found the CruiseJunkie...a Canadian college professor who has decided for himself that the cruise industry as a whole is the spawn of satan, and is on a life long crusade to twist and distort every news tidbit he can so that it looks like the cruise industry's fault.

I would guess that your guess is an accurate guess.
Hence my harsh comments.

Interesting you should post this now. There is someone posting all over (so far I saw it on planetfeedback.com and my3cents.com) that she was sexually assaulted on VOS. She even names the crew member. I came to this forum to see if she posted anything here about it.

I think you are as safe on a ship as you are anywhere else. No matter where you are, in your home city, travelling, etc, you need to exercise due diligence.

I saw that on my3cents.com. I'm not to sure that I believe everything she said. It's a bit fishy.

Not to mention that the story seems to be changing with each of her responses. Her original complaint makes it sound like she was a passenger but comments made after by her make it sound like she had a relationship with this person and he ripped her off for $20,000 (or $17,000 depending on which account you believe). She also now claims she's pregnant with his child and that he had her assaulted. Too crazy!

Don't fall for the sensationalism. It does not happen so frequently that you need to be concerned about it. I'm not saying to act like a brain-dead touron on board cruise ships, but if you just practice good common sense, you will be fine.

I'm not always one to place blame on victims, but in most cruise ship crime cases that I have read about, they were preceded by some act of poor judgment by the victim (like, getting drunk, alone, and entering the crew area with a crewman). They were situations that could have been avoided.

Our experience - our oldest got hit in a Circle C event by another child. The matre d' informed us and a ship's security officer told us what had happened. DD was checked out by the doctor (no charge). We felt that it was handled professionally considering both were young teenagers. This happened about 6 cruises ago.
